Abstract The rich emission line spectrum of the symbiotic nova RR Tel provides one of the best laboratories for testing recent theoretical calculations of Einstein A-values and electron collision strengths. The GHRS provides the dynamic range, resolution and ability to handle fixed-pattern noise to make possible a systematic study of RR Tel with the aim of determining the accuracy of astrophysically important atomic data. These data include those used to measure electron densities in a wide variety of systems, such as the atmospheres of late-type stars and planetary nebulae. We will construct Empirical and semi-empirical models of the nebula of RR Tel based on a wide set of density and temperature diagnostics, and examine (and include) the effects of inhomogeneities on the inferred constraints derived for atomic transitions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5863( 0) - 07/18/95 18:21 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The comprehensive project outlined in the scientific description will take 8 orbits to complete. In addition to the many important spectral features identified in the text, many others will be observed with good S/N with the proposed exposures. These will form a valuable dataset in themselves. We can acquire the target on Side 2 with the N2 mirror with 18,000 counts per 200 ms step. Owing to the low accuracy of the coordinates for RR Tel in the literature we have scheduled a SEARCH-SIZE=5. After the completion of the Side 2 observations we will move to Side 1 during an occultation period. The exposure times are based on observed IUE fluxes, allowing for the observed slow [but erratic] temporal decrease in fluxes, the estimated uncertainty in the line fluxes is a factor of 2. The fluxes are mostly from the tabulations of Aufdenberg (1993). The FWHM of the emission lines are estimated from the tabulations of Penston et al. (1983). The detector sensitivities and other details have been taken from the GHRS Handbook (V 5.0). For most of the important intersystem multiplets we have chosen the exposure time such that the weakest feature has a peak S/N ~20 -> 25 per diode. The strongest lines will have much larger signal and we will use FP-SPLIT to avoid the S/N becoming limited by fixed pattern noise. The weaker quadrupole lines are expected to have a peak S/N ~ 15 per diode. WAVECAL's have been scheduled between exposures providing velocity information to establish an accurate absolute wavelength scale. This is necessary because we wish to measure wavelengths in order to better constrain the dynamical models of RR Tel. We include two G140L exposures to measure weak line fluxes at S/N ~ 15-20 for a typical line with peak flux of 1.0* 10^-3 erg cm^-2 s-1. The longest sub-exposure will be 5 minutes to avoid geomagnetic effects. We have planned the Phase II schedule so that after a WAVE calibration at least one readout is made before the exposure is broken by Earth occultation. In this way at least one reference spectrum will exist so that the remaining readouts can be regisitered with the wavelength calibrated spectrum. Individual fragments of sub-exposures broken by Earth occultation have been kept as small as possible within the RPS2 program. We have taken advantage of the light throughput and photometric accuracy of the Large Science Aperture. The nebula region is expected to be unresolved.
