Free format text (please update) This proposal represents the continuation of our systematic and definitive study, using HST observations, of a large sample of PNs at known distance in the Magellanic Clouds. Direct PC and FOC imaging has already been obtained for all of our proposed Cycle 5 sample in previous-cycle GTO programs. These images give the spatial structures, sizes, ionised masses, and dynamical ages of the PNs. However, no UV spectroscopy exists for these objects. As in previous cycles of our GO program, we are requesting FOS spectrophotometry in the range 1150--4800 Angstrom. By using this data in combination with the PC images and ground-based data, and with stellar atmospheric and evolutionary models, we will derive the effective temperature, luminosity, and core mass for the PN central stars, and determine the nebular abundances of all elements involved in dredge-up processes. The program objects cover an important high luminosity and excitation region of the HR diagram, and complement the coverage of our previously- observed sample. With this new sample we will achieve complete coverage of post-AGB evolutionary parameter space. Large gains in observing efficiency are obtained by executing the program during CVZ periods. Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: In Cycle 5 we propose to obtain FOS UV spectrophotometry for 9 PNs for which we already have ground-based spectrophotometry, fluxes, densities, expansion velocities, and for which GO/GTO PC/FOC images are available from the HST archive. We are proposing FOS/BL UV spectrophotometry in the range 1150-4800 Angstrom using the G130H, G190H, G270H and G400H gratings, and the 1 arcsec circular aperture. The G400H grating ensures adequate overlap with the ground-based spectrophotometry for normalisation purposes. We aim to achieve a typical S/N of 30-50 per 50 Angstrom in the nebular + stellar continuum, allowing a good detection of the central star against the nebular continuum, even when the stellar flux is only 10 percent of the nebular continuum. This objective also ensures that uniform, high quality, high dynamic range nebular spectra are obtained for the full range of nebular conditions. These data will be combined with our ground-based data of comparable quality covering the wavelength range 3200-8000 Angstrom (Meatheringham & Dopita 1991a, b). In the decade of frequency covered by these observations, we will see emission lines of the astrophysically important elements such as He, C, N, O, Si and S in the full range of ionisation stages expected to be present in the PNs. For this reason, and on the basis of our experience, and also because the allowable nebular models are strongly constrained by the earlier HST imaging results, we expect the derived chemical abundances to be accurate to within 10 percent. For the FOS spectrophotometry to be used as input to photoionization-modelling codes, all the grating observations need to be obtained contiguously, and without interruption, so that the same part of any PN is observed through the 1 arcsec circular aperture for each grating. With this constraint, all the objects need to be scheduled within the continuous viewing zone (CVZ). The table below shows CVZ information for the proposed sample, taken from Appendix F of the Phase I proposal instructions.
