Abstract NGC 7052 is an E4 radio galaxy with a LINER spectrum and a rapidly rotating 3.2" x 0.6" nuclear disk of dust and ionized gas. In ground-based data the Gaussian velocity dispersion of the emission lines falls from 250 km/s in the center to 60 km/s at 1.5". The rotation is 250 km/s at 1.5". The central peak in the velocity dispersion can be due either to seeing broadening of Keplerian rotation around a black hole of 10^9 solar masses, or alternatively, to turbulent gas motions near the center. We will obtain images of NGC 7052 with the WFPC2 and spectra with the FOS. The WFPC2 images serve as early acquisition data for the FOS observations. B (F450W) and I (F814W) wide-band images will be obtained with the nucleus positioned on the PC1 CCD. V (F547M) medium-band images will be obtained with the nucleus on the WF2 CCD. These images allow a determination of the optical depth of the dust, and of the stellar mass distribution near the nucleus. Narrow band images will be obtained with the LRF at 6480 Angstrom (`off-band') and 6675 Angstrom (`on-band'). This allows the construction of an H_alpha + [NII] image for studying the morphology of the nuclear gas disk. FOS/RD spectra will be obtained with the G570H grating and the 0.3 and 0.1 -PAIR apertures, at five different positions, on the nucleus and along the major axis. These spectra allow a determination of the gas kinematics near the nucleus, yielding improved constraints on the presence or absence of a massive black hole. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5848( 9) - 07/04/96 11:07 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ SUMMARY: We will obtain images of NGC 7052 with the WFPC2, using the following configurations: (i) filters F450W and F814W and the nucleus on the PC1 CCD; (ii) filter F547M and the nucleus on the WF2 CCD; and (iii) the LRF at 6480 Angstrom and 6675 Angstrom. An ORIENT special requirement is necessary for the WFPC2 observations, to minimize interference between artifacts due to bright saturated stars on the images, and the central few arcsec of the galaxy. The WFPC2 images will be taken in one visit of 5 orbits, and will be used as early acquisition data for the FOS observations. FOS/RD spectra will be obtained with the G570H grating and the 0.3 and 0.1-PAIR apertures, at five different positions, on the nucleus and along the major axis. These FOS observations will be split over two visits of 7 and 5 orbits, respectively. In the first of these visits, a five-stage peak-up acquisition will be performed on a star at 11.338" from the nucleus, followed by a slew of the telescope to the galaxy. In the second of these visits we will acquire the same star by reusing the acquisition offsets determined in the first visit, followed by one peak-up acquisition stage and an offset to the galaxy. WFPC2 -- CHOICE OF FILTERS AND TARGET POSITIONINGS: To study the stellar light distribution we obtain wide-band images with the F814W filter (since dust absorption is least important at large wavelengths) with the galaxy nucleus positioned on the PC1 CCD (to obtain maximum spatial resolution). We also obtain F450W images with the galaxy at the same positions on the PC1 CCD. This allows the construction of a B-I (i.e., F450W - F814W) color image, so as to study the optical depth of the dust near the nucleus. The H_alpha + [NII] emission lines in NGC 7052 are redshifted by 102 Angstrom with respect to their laboratory values. There is no FxxxN filter on the WFPC2 suitable for studying them. We therefore obtain images through the LRF at 6675 Angstrom (`on-band'). The target must be positioned at the position on the WF2 CCD that corresponds to this LRF wavelength (which uses the FR680N ramp filter configuration). The emission lines in NGC 7052 are confined to the central 2 arcsec. The small useful field of view for the LRF's is therefore not a problem. We also need an `off-band' image. Preferably, this image should be obtained through a filter that: (i) transmits a wavelength range that is free of emission lines; (ii) has a large FWHM, so as to yield high S/N; (iii) is centered on a wavelength as close as possible to that of the on-band image. One possibility is the F547M filter. We obtain images with this filter with the target at exactly the same position on the WF2 CCD as in the on-band LRF images. This facilitates the on-band minus off-band subtraction in the data- reduction stage. The F547M filter has the disadvantage that the central wavelengths of the on-band and off-band observations differ by more than 1000 Angstrom. Because of this, the effects of dust absorption might be significantly different in the two images. This will complicate the construction of an emission line image. Therefore, we obtain a second set of off-band images through a narrow filter closer to the on-band wavelength. Again, none of the FxxxN filters on the WFPC2 are well suited. We therefore use the LRF at 6480 Angstrom. For these observations the target must be positioned at the position on the WF3 CCD that corresponds to this LRF wavelength (which also uses the FR680N ramp filter configuration). In total, images will be obtained with 5 different filters, filling a total of five orbits. The exposure time per filter is chosen so as to yield sufficient S/N for a proper analysis of all images. WFPC2 -- MINIMIZING COMPLICATIONS DUE TO SATURATED STARS: We have made a detailed study of ground-based R-band observations of a field of 5 x 5 arcmin, centered on NGC 7052. The positions and magnitudes of all stars were measured. For the LRF exposures of approx. 1000 sec, and for F547M exposures of a few hundred sec, stars with R < 15.5 will exceed the full-well capacity of the CCDs (10^5 electrons). For the wide-band F814W and F450W exposures of a few hundred sec this will happen for stars with R < 17. There are seven stars with magnitudes in the range 14 < R < 17 within 1 arcmin from the nucleus of NGC 7052. Two of these will be severely saturated. This leads to a variety of artifacts, most noticeably bleeding along columns and diffraction spikes at 45 degree angles with the columns. Obviously, we want to minimize the presence of bright stars on the CCDs of interest as much as possible. For the bright stars that cannot be avoided, we wish to make sure that no saturation artifacts interfere with the central few arcsec of the galaxy. This can be achieved by a careful choice of the orientation of the CCDs on the sky. In addition, for the PC1 observations we need to make a careful choice for the target position on the CCD (for the other observations the target position is more-or-less fixed by the LRF wavelengths). We have identified the best telescope ORIENT. This is given below as special requirement for the WFPC2 observations. The target positioning on the CCDs is determined by POS TARG optional parameters. WFPC2 -- EXPOSURE STRATEGY (COSMIC RAYS; HOT PIXELS; GAIN): To make sure that we will be able to properly identify and remove all cosmic ray hits in the data reduction stage, we will obtain three exposures with each filter. Two exposures will be obtained with the target at the same position on the CCD, while the third exposure will be obtained with the target shifted by a small integer number of pixels. This allows identification of hot pixels in the data reduction stage. We expect less than 10000 photons from the galaxy in all WFPC2 images, much less than the ADC saturation limit. We therefore use the low gain setting (ATD-GAIN = 7) for nearly all exposures. A star with V=17.41 at 11.338" from the nucleus of NGC 7052 will be used as offset-acquisition star for the FOS observations. The WFPC2 observations will be used as early acquisition data. To make sure that the position of this star can be accurately determined from the images, ADC saturation must be avoided. We therefore use a shorter exposure time for one of our F814W exposures and for one of our F547M exposures. To increase the dynamic range of these exposures, we obtain them with the high gain setting (ATD-GAIN = 15). WFPC2 -- EARLY ACQUISITION INFORMATION: The WFPC2 data serves as early acquisition data. We have used it to measure accurately the offset between the galaxy nucleus and the offset star that is to be used for the FOS acquisition. We have determined accurately the V-band magnitude of this star. We have also determined accurately the emission line fluxes near the nucleus of NGC 7052. Based on this information we have restructured visits 2 and 3 of this project with respect to previous versions of this Phase II proposal. FOS -- TARGET ACQUISITION STRATEGY: There is a star with magnitude V=17.41 at 11.338" from the nucleus of the galaxy. We will do a target acquisition on this star, and then slew the telescope to the position of the galaxy nucleus. NGC 7052 has a nuclear dust disk. The nucleus is therefore NOT the point with the maximum surface brightness. Hence, it is not possible to acquire the target by a peak-up acquisition on the galaxy itself. For the offset target acquisition to work, it is necessary to know accurately the positional offset between the galaxy nucleus and the offset star. We have determined this offset from our early acquisition WFPC2 images (visit 1). We do not know whether the offset star is variable. We therefore do a multi-stage ACQ/PEAK acquisition of the star, rather than an ACQ/BINARY acquisition. The star is not very bright, and we therefore do the peak-up acquisition with the MIRROR. The strategy for the first peak-up acquisition stage is determined by the accuracy with which the coordinates of the star are known a priori. The best estimate for the coordinates comes from the WFPC2 early acquisition images. Our experience with coordinate measurements from different HST images of the galaxy M32 (see our proposal 5847) indicate that such coordinates have a typical RMS error of 1". In the present case we find that coordinates determined from the WFPC2 NGC 7052 images differ by 0.7" from those determined with GASP. The aperture to be used in visit 2 of our program is the 0.3. The standard acquisition procedure is to use four ACQ/PEAK stages, starting with a 1x3 dwell pattern of the 4.3 aperture, followed by dwells using the 1.0, 0.3 and 0.3 apertures, respectively. In the present case, the position of the star will not be known accurately enough to be confident that it will fall in the 4.3 aperture. We must start with at least a 2x5 dwell pattern of the 4.3 aperture to make sure that it is found with >99% probability. If we do this and stick to the default four-stage peak-up, then only the first two stages will fit in the first orbit of the visit. Only the third stage will fit in the second orbit, and the fourth and final stage will take up most of the third orbit. This is then an extremely inefficient procedure that leaves much unused target visibility at the end of the first and second orbit. We have therefore devised an alternative scheme based on five stages that can be executed entirely in only two orbits and yields the same pointing accuracy as the default four-stage peak-up. It uses a 2x5 dwell of the 4.3 aperture, a 7x2 dwell of the 1.0 aperture, a 3x3 dwell of the 0.5 aperture, a 3x3 dwell of the 0.3 aperture, and finally, a 5x5 dwell of the 0.3 aperture. For each stage the parameters SCAN-STEP-X and SCAN-STEP-Y are chosen such that apertures at different dwell positions overlap slightly, and in addition cover entirely the aperture chosen in the previous stage. The first three stages fill the first orbit of the visit, the final two stages fill the second orbit of the visit. We have developed software that simulates the target acquisition process. The main issues we wanted to test are: (i) the influence of shot noise associated with the finite exposures time at each dwell point; (ii) the influence of the background surface brightness of the galaxy; (iii) the influence of y-location errors on the results of the first acquisition stage; and (iv) the influence of telescope jitter. The background surface brightness of the galaxy was found not to be much of a problem. The number of galaxy counts observed over an area of 3.7" x 1.3" (as appropriate for the first stage) is only 30% of the total number of counts from the star. Uncertainties in the y-location of spectra, combined with the fact that the onboard GIMP-correction scheme is not working during peak-up acquisitions, can lead to systematic errors in the first peak-up stage. The detected photons at each dwell point can come from a region that is up to 0.25" away from where the telescope is actually pointing. To make sure that this doesn't lead to acquisition failure one must choose a sufficiently large overlap between apertures at different dwell points in the first stage. The effects of jitter are small. Unless there is a guide star recentering event, the target star will not be lost. Jitter only adds to the final pointing accuracy. Our software indicates that our planned 5-stage peak-up should work, and yield a final RMS pointing accuracy of 0.024". The expected total number of counts at each stage of the acquisition can be calculated from the Table on page 39 of the Cycle 5 FOS Handbook. The results are listed in the comments to the individual acquisition exposures. In the second visit of our FOS observations we will re- use the target acquisition offsets calculated in the first visit. This requires the same telescope orientation for the two visits. Also, the second FOS visit should be scheduled between 4 and 12 days after the first visit, to allow the data to be processed at STScI. We will do one peak-up acquisition stage in the second visit, to verify the correct target positioning. This will fill much of the first orbit of the second FOS visit. FOS -- ACCUM GALAXY EXPOSURES: We will obtain data in ACCUM mode with the red detector, the G570H grating and the 0.3 aperture at three different positions, on the nucleus (1 orbit) and at +/- 0.2" along the major axis (2 orbits each). In addition we will obtain data with the 0.1-PAIR aperture at +/- 0.09" along the major axis (2 orbits each). These exposure times will yield sufficient S/N in the H_alpha + [NII] emission lines to be able to determine the gas rotation velocities and velocity dispersions with reasonable accuracy. The gas rotates with approximately 250 km/s near the nucleus. However, the predictions of different models differ by only of order 20 to 50 km/s. Hence, accurate wavelength calibration is essential for the success of our project. We therefore obtain a wavelength calibration exposure at the end of each orbit. UNCALIBRATED STATUS OF 0.1-PAIR APERTURE: As indicated by RPS2 in a feasibility diagnostic, the 0.1-PAIR aperture has currently not been fully calibrated. We have conferred with the FOS instrument scientists, and have decided that this should not preclude the use of this aperture in our program. FOS -- ORIENT SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: To allow a proper interpretation of the ionized gas kinematics derived from the 0.1-PAIR aperture spectra, it is essential that this aperture aligns parallel to the major axis of the galaxy. For this to be so we require an ORIENTation special requirement. The major axis position angle of NGC 7052 is 63.45 degrees. The angle between the +U3-axis and the FOS +Y-axis is 81.8D. Hence we require one of the following four telescope orientations: 55.25D, 145.25D, 235.25D or 325.25D. The latter turns out be unschedulable, leaving the first three options. We tolerate a difference of +/-10D from these optimum orientations, to allow for more flexible scheduling. (Visit 04 - 01-Mar-1996) FOS -- ORIENT SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: For the FOS/RD, 1 arcsec on the sky projects to 14.48 Angstrom. This corresponds to 650 km/s at the wavelength of H_alpha + [NII]. An asymmetric distribution of the galaxy light within the aperture, in the direction of dispersion, will therefore lead to a systematic error in the measured velocity. Models for the flux distribution of NGC 7052 and the HST PSF indicate that these errors can be sizable: of order 40 km/s for observations with the 0.3 aperture at 0.16 arcsec from the galaxy nucleus, assuming that the galaxy major axis lies along the FOS x-axis (the direction of dispersion). However, the errors are zero if the galaxy major axis lies along the FOS y-axis (perpendicular to the direction of dispersion), because the distribution of the light within the aperture is then symmetric in the direction of dispersion. Hence, this orientation is strongly preferred, to avoid having to make poorly quantifiable post-hoc corrections. For this to be so we require an ORIENTation special requirement. The major axis position angle of NGC 7052 is 63.45 degrees. The angle between the +U3-axis and the FOS +Y-axis is 81.8D. Hence we require one of the following telescope orientations: 145.25D or 325.25D. The latter turns out be unschedulable, leaving only the first option. We tolerate a difference of +/-20D from this optimum orientation, to allow for more flexible scheduling. For the same reason we have added a `SCHED 60%' special requirement. FOS -- VERFICATION IMAGES: To verify the target positioning for the FOS spectra we will obtain one FOS/ACQ image of the galaxy nucleus in each of the two FOS visits. The adopted exposure time yields 330 counts in the diode placed on the galaxy nucleus. (Visit 04 - 01-Mar-1996) FOS -- VERFICATION IMAGES: To verify the target positioning we obtain an FOS/ACQ image of the galaxy nucleus at the end of the visit. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- We will obtain wavelength calibration spectra at the end of each orbit of the FOS visits. As explained above, this is essential for the success of our project. These calibration exposures do not waste any visibility time, since the wavelength calibration exposures can be done during occultation.
