Free format text (please update) The Homunculus nebula around Eta Car and the nebula/jet of AG Car were expelled when these two Luminous Blue Variables suffered ``giant eruptions", outbursts that rivaled a supernova explosion in luminosity and carried away several solar masses of material from their massive progenitors. HST has already proven its superior power to image these outflows on spatial scales that cannot be achieved from the ground. These HST images reveal enormous detail in continuum filters, which presumably map the nebulae in dust-scattered light. Since scattered light is very highly polarized we propose to use the unique capabilities of the HST to image the outflows in polarized light. We wish to obtain imaging polarimetry in two widely separated continuum filters and in the H Alpha\ filter, in order to constrain three-dimensional models of the nebular structures in gas and dust components. The polarization maps will not only provide complementary information to surface-brightness and colors maps, but will also contain unique information that cannot be gathered via any other technique. Of particular importance is the possibility of detecting in polarized light the circumstellar disks that are suspected to exist owing to the axisymmetric nature of the outflows. By understanding the morphology of the nebulae we will be in a better position to understand the mass -loss process, and hence, the evolution of massive stars. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: In order to achieve our stated scientific objectives we require observations of Eta Car at three relative polarization angles each separated by 60 Deg. Despite the fact that the nebula is expected to be highly polarized we need to maximize the precision of our polarimetric observations. We will therefore conduct all of our observations with the targets located on WF2, and obtain our desired polarization angles though a combination of the available partial filter rotations for POLQ and telescope roll angle. By using a combination of both we will minimize scheduling restrictions. Since Eta Car is a relatively bright object (V=6.2 and 6.9) we have designed our observing program to take account of the limited dynamic range of WFPC2, scattered light, and the possibility of ghost images close to the star which are known to occur at some level for most WFPC2 filters. We address the problem of limited dynamic range by obtaining short and long exposures of Eta Car in each filter. In each set of images there will be CCD saturation leading to charge bleeding up and down the columns. The shortest image will contain at most 2-3 saturated columns, and while the longer exposures will have larger number of saturated columns close to the star, they provide deeper imaging further away from the star. Using the short and long exposure images in combination it will be possible to view the circumstellar environment of Eta Car at different distances from the central star. -------------------------------------------------- Implementation Notes -------------------------------------------------- 1) This program should be run with 4 visits only.
