Section 4 Title: Occultation of GSC5249-01240 by Saturn: Atmospheric and Ring Studies Proposal_Category: GO Scientific_Category: Solar System Cycle: 5 Investigators PI_name: Dr. Amanda S. Bosh PI_Institution: Lowell Observatory CoI_Name: Prof. James L. Elliot CoI_Institution: Massachusetts Institute of Technology Contact: N ! Y or N (designate at most one contact) Abstract: ! Free format text (please update) On 1995 November 20-21, Saturn and its rings will occult GSC5249-01240 while Saturn is near its stationary point. This will result in probes of the atmosphere at multiple latitudes and of the rings at several longitudes. We propose to observe this event to (i) establish Saturn's atmospheric structure in the 1-100 microbar region (inaccessible to Voyager instruments), (ii) determine the extent of latitudinal homogeneity in composition and temperature present near north latitudes 35-75 degrees, and (iii) probe the ring system for features of low optical depth (with spatial resolution better than 1 km) by taking advantage of the low opening angle of the rings as we approach ring-plane crossing in 1995. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: (1) More than 12 hours before or after the occultation observations, obtain spectrum of star with the G650L/BL element (to be used during the occultation observations). This determines the spectrum of the star for later use in data analysis. (2) One orbit before, or in same orbit as the start of the occultation observations, acquire an "offset- acquisition" star: one that is within 1.5 arcmin of the star to be occulted but further from Saturn and its rings than the target star. This offset acquisition technique has been successfully implemented before (GTO/HSP1081, and others) to avoid problems with target acquisition in the bright scattered light background near Saturn. A suitable offset acquisition candidate will be chosen after ground-based astrometric frames are obtained and analyzed. (3) Blind offset to GSC5249-01240. Prior astrometry will have determined the relative positions of these two stars to better than 0.1 arcsec, assuring accurate placement of the target star in the science aperture. (4) Track on GSC5249-01240 while Saturn's atmosphere passes in front of it (7-8 orbits). There will be one atmosphere observation per orbit, each lasting about 15 minutes. (5) Approximately 10 orbits between the time the star exits the atmosphere and it enters the rings. During this time, can obtain spectra of Saturn's atmosphere (near occultation latitudes) and rings. This can also be done after ring egress or before ingress of the atmosphere portion of the occultation. These observations establish the spectra of Saturn's atmosphere and rings separately, without any stellar component. These will be used in later analyses. (6) One orbit before, or in the same orbit as the start of the ring occultation observations, acquire offset-acq star. (7) Blind offset to GSC5249-01240. (8) Track on GSC5249-01240 while Saturn's rings pass in front of it (4-5 orbits). There will be one ring observation per orbit, each lasting as long as possible (<2*18 minutes, utilizing both tape recorders at the risk of losing data). (9) If atmospheric and ring spectra were not previously obtained, get them now. The quantity of data obtained in this set of observations may pose a problem. If possible, the tape recorder(s) should be downloaded during the earth-occultation portion of each orbit. If this is not possible, we will need to sacrifice some orbits to relay the previously obtained data. This will reduce the total number of orbits used for this proposal. This will reduce the latitudinal coverage of the atmosphere occultation, and the multiple passes through the rings. While it is not desirable, and the scientific return goes down in direct proportion to the number of lost orbits, we will retain adequate coverage due to the nature of the stellar path. Cycle 5: Primary Orbits: 16 Exposures: 27 Real_Time_Justification: Time-critical: stellar occultations by solar system bodies are inherently time-critical observations. They occur at a particular time, determined by the planetary ephemeris and star position; therefore, no other dates/times are acceptable. In addition, this particular event is truly rare and time-critical because it occurs near Saturn's stationary point (the point when the Earth's motion and Saturn's motion, projected onto the sky plane, are almost equal and opposite, making Saturn appear to be stationary). It is very unusual for a planet to occult a star near a stationary point (statistically, because it is a relatively small area of sky), but these are the most useful observations because the planet is moving slowly, allowing us to increase our S/N and spatial resolution. We plan to apply for observing time at a ground-based station (such as the Infrared Telescope Facility at Mauna Kea, Hawaii). While the S/N and resolution from such a site will be greatly inferior to that from the HST, additional observations will aid in constraining the geometry of the event (determining the ephemeris offsets f_0, g_0 are a crucial part of the analysis), and may also provide additional data points for studying ringlet kinematics. We will also provide ground-based astrometry prior to the event. With this astrometry we will locate an offset acquisition target and determine its position relative to GSC5249-01240 with an accuracy of better than 0.1 arcsec. We will also use this astrometry to refine the predicted times of feature events. Calibration_Justification: ! Move appropriate text from Real_Time_Justification Additional_Comments: Fixed_Targets !
