Free format text (please update) We have been allocated ~70 hours of spacecraft time on the Infrared Space Observatory to obtain far-infrared (IR, 4--200 Mum) photometry of ~ 140 quasars and active galaxies (AGN) selected to cover the full range of continuum properties and redshift known to be present in the parent population. These data will, for the first time, provide us with far-infrared continuum observations of a large and representative sample of quasars and AGN. With this sample we will be able to make the first detailed study of the relative importance of dust and non-thermal processes in generating the IR emission. Current, small and strongly-biassed samples indicate dust in radio- quiet and non-thermal in radio-loud quasars, but no representative sample is available for a full investigation. Since quasars and AGN emit roughly equal energy throughout the far-IR--X-ray spectral range, multi-wavelength data are essential to investigate the energy generation mechanism(s) involved and in particular the relation of the far-IR emission to the remainder of the spectral energy distribution (SED). In order to take full advantage of our unique far-IR dataset, we propose to analyse all available archival HST data which will, in combination with planned/already available ground-based optical and near-IR data, determine the IR--ultraviolet (UV) SEDs. For about half the sample, X-ray data are also available. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: Real_Time_Justification: Calibration_Justification: !
