Free format text (please update) In the context of our studies of the luminosity function of 30 Doradus, we propose to investigate the nature of the low-mass star population announced in the Early-Release Observations of R136. If this population turns out to be associated with the current star formation burst, our understanding of 30 Doradus as the local counterpart of distant starbursts is not correct. Instead, 30 Doradus may be considered a globular cluster in the making. If, on the other hand, it can be demonstrated that the low-mass population is not associated with the current star formation activity, 30 Doradus has eventually been established as a true starburst Rosetta.
