Abstract Spectroscopy of the Jovian upper atmosphere in the NUV/FUV spectral range provides information about the structure, dynamics and atmospheric composition from the troposphere to the upper stratosphere. Recent advances in our observational capabilities in the FUV/NUV range have now made tenable the additional study of the latitudinal structure of the Jovian upper atmosphere relative to the visible zone and belts. The primary advances allowing this new research have come from the FOS, which provides much higher quality spectra than had been previously obtained from Jupiter in this band pass, and from the WFPC-II, which can now image the Jovian atmosphere in the UV. There is clear evidence of banded structure in WFPC-II images of Jupiter extending wavelengths to below 1800. The great red spot (GRS) is also visible in these images. We propose a program to compare images of the GRS and this banded structure with archived FOS spectra taken at several different latitudes and at the GRS. We will also compare the FOS spectra with an IUE albedo map obtained in early July of this year. We will develop a new model for the removal of grating light in the FOS, compare the results of the subtraction with first with IUE spectra taken at similar locations and then with structure seen in the images. Lastly, we will develop and apply photochemical models to the FOS albedo spectra with the goal of determining the nature of the absorbing material. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5797( 0) - 07/18/95 18:01 - [ 2] Data Distribution Media: 8MM Blocking Factor: 10 Ship To: PI_Address Ship Via: UPS Email: , ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5797( 0) - 07/18/95 18:01 - [ 3] Summary Form for Proposal 5797 Item Used in this proposal ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Proposal Category AR ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Scientific Category Solar System ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
