6. Abstract

Using data from the IUE satellite, it has recently been shown that the emission-
lines of radio-quiet QSOs evolve between z=2 and the present, and those of radio-
loud QSOs apparently do not. This surprising link between the hitherto disparate
mysteries of QSO evolution, radio-loudness and emission-line structure may offer an
important clue to all three problems. We propose to use HST archive spectra to
confirm this result, and to identify the reason for the spectral evolution. The
superior resolution and signal-to-noise ratios of HST spectra will allow us to
separate out the evolution of emission and absorption components, the contributions
of the narrow and broad-line regions, and to investigate the evolution of weak
emission-lines. We will also use high resolution HST images to look for connections
between the spectral evolution and the QSO environments.
