Abstract The locations of supernovae (SNe) in the local stellar and gaseous environment contain important clues to their progenitor stars. Access to this information, however, has been hampered by the limited resolution achieved by ground- based observations. High spatial resolution images from HST of fields in which SNe had been observed can improve the situation considerably, even if they were acquired for other purposes. They can provide accurate determinations of any association of SNe with H II or star-forming regions. In cases where multi-filter observations are available, we should be able to determine the local stellar environment and search for possible attenuation of the SN by dust in the host galaxy. By checking the fields for background sources, we will be able to correct the existing SN light curves and luminosities if necessary. When a SN has been observed incidentally, information can be gained on its optical and UV emission. Deep HST images can be used to find light echoes of SNe, as well as recover SNe interacting with circumstellar material at very late times. Finally, a search for the progenitor stars of SNe can be made in preexisting HST images of the host galaxies. This proposal is a natural and important continuation of our approved Cycle 4 Archival Program, which utilizes data only from Cycles 1--3. The data quality in Cycle 4, with the corrected optics, is far superior and will lead to significant improvements for this program. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5793( 0) - 07/18/95 18:00 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Data Distribution Media: 8MM Blocking Factor: 10 Ship To: PI_Address Ship Via: UPS Email: , ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5793( 0) - 07/18/95 18:00 - [ 3] Summary Form for Proposal 5793 Item Used in this proposal ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Proposal Category AR ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Scientific Category Interstellar Medium ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
