Y or N (designate at most one contact) Abstract: ! Free format text (please update) We propose to use archived WFPC images of SN 1987A to investigate the structure and time--dependent evolution of the three rings surrounding the supernova. New software has recently become available to permit reduction and extensive analysis of the WFPC images which was extremely difficult or impossible before. We plan to subtract a Tiny--TIM generated PSF template from the images to remove the deleterious effects of two nearby bright stars, which should reveal detail of the three rings that was previously obscured. These new data can then be compared with the archived FOC data (already reduced and analyzed by Plait as part of the Supernova INtensive Study), and can also be compared to the post--refurbishment FOC and WFPC2 images, which are expected to be made public shortly. Except for the few post--refurbishment images, Plait is already in possession of all the images necessary, so no archive retrieval is needed. Questions !
