These line_4: observations will extend previous extensive ground based coronagraphic line_5: investigations, and modelling by the authors. The data will enable us line_6: to understand better the central clearing in the disk and whether it is line_7: caused by sublimation or possible planet formation. The observations will line_8: also constrain the geometric properties of the disk including its line_9: inclination angle, vertical thickness and radial profile. Such line_10: observations limit models for the dynamics of the disk, including its line_11: velocity dispersion and hence mass distribution, and radial mass line_12: transport mechanisms. If density waves or clear zones are observed, they line_13: will give indirect evidence for the presence of massive bodies (planets) line_14: in the disk. The observations involve a judicious use of roll line_15: deconvolution and PSF modelling in order to allow the line_16: central stellar image and associated scattered light to be subtracted. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: BURROWS fname: CHRISTOPHER title: PI mi: J. inst: STSCI country: USA esa: Y ! lname: KRIST fname: JOHN mi: E. inst: STSCI country: USA ! lname: ARTYMOWICZ fname: PAWEL inst: LICK OBSERVATORY country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: For Beta Pictoris, the observations are designed to give the clearest possible line_2: image of the disk. The basic observations are in reflected stellar light line_3: with the star in the corner of PC1 (near the OTA axis). This is done to line_4: avoid the scatter found to occur in WFPC2 due to the CCD electrode structure line_5: (documented in the WFPC2 Instrument Science Report 94-01). This type of line_6: scatter occurs only in the chip where the star is located. By using the proper line_7: orientations, we can detect the disk in WF4 and WF2, unaffected by such line_8: scatter (where scatter from the OTA dominates). To separate disk and instrument line_9: scatter, the observations will be taken at different roll angles (scatter line_10: structure will remain stationary while the disk rotates). ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: The observations must occur when the Beta Pictoris disk is aligned so that line_2: it is visible in the WF4 and WF2 cameras. The orientations are chosen to line_3: ensure that as much of the disk as possible is visible. All three roll line_4: angles should occur in the same visit, and the maximum roll offsets are line_5: preferred. The position angle of the disk is 31 degrees. ! question: 10 section: 1 line_1: The authors have workstations and already have written the relevant computer line_2: software to model the PSF, subtract the images, parameterize the disk, and fit line_3: it to thermal and mass equilibrium models. The authors will perform the data line_4: reduction and analysis. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: BURROWS fname: CHRISTOPHER mi: J. category: PI inst: STScI addr_1: SPACE TELESCOPE SCIENCE INSTITUTE addr_2: 3700 SAN MARTIN DRIVE city: BALTIMORE state: MD zip: 21218 country: USA phone: 410-338-4913 lname: KRIST fname: JOHN mi: E. category: CON inst: STScI addr_1: 3700 San Martin Drive city: Baltimore state: MD zip: 21218 country: USA phone: (410) 338-5030 ! ! end of general_form_address records fixed_targets: targnum: 1 name_1: HD39060 name_2: BETA-PIC descr_1: A,124,904 pos_1: RA = 5H 46M 5.935S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC = -51D 5' 1.75" +/- 0.1" equinox: 1950 pm_or_par: Y pos_epoch_bj: B pos_epoch_yr: 1950.00 ra_pm_val: 0.0005 dec_pm_val: 0.087 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=3.9,TYPE=A5V fluxnum_2: 1 fluxval_2: B-V=0.2 exposure_logsheet: linenum: 1.100 sequence_1: DEFINE sequence_2: IMAGES1 targname: HD39060 config: WFPC2 opmode: IMAGE aperture: PC1-FIX sp_element: F555W num_exp: 1 time_per_exp: 1.0S s_to_n: 1 fluxnum_1: 1 priority: 1 param_1: ATD-GAIN=15 param_2: CR-SPLIT=NO comment_1: THIS EXPOSURE USED FOR comment_2: REGISTRATION. linenum: 1.200 sequence_1: DEFINE sequence_2: IMAGES1 targname: HD39060 config: WFPC2 opmode: IMAGE aperture: PC1-FIX sp_element: F555W num_exp: 1 time_per_exp: 40.0S s_to_n: 1 fluxnum_1: 1 priority: 1 param_1: CLOCKS=YES param_2: ATD-GAIN=15 param_3: CR-SPLIT=NO comment_1: STAR WILL BE SATURATED. linenum: 1.300 sequence_1: DEFINE sequence_2: IMAGES1 targname: HD39060 config: WFPC2 opmode: IMAGE aperture: PC1-FIX sp_element: F555W num_exp: 2 time_per_exp: 4.0M s_to_n: 1 fluxnum_1: 1 priority: 1 param_1: CLOCKS=YES param_2: ATD-GAIN=15 param_3: CR-SPLIT=NO comment_1: STAR WILL BE SATURATED. linenum: 1.400 sequence_1: DEFINE sequence_2: IMAGES1 targname: HD39060 config: WFPC2 opmode: IMAGE aperture: PC1-FIX sp_element: F814W num_exp: 1 time_per_exp: 5.0M s_to_n: 1 fluxnum_1: 1 priority: 1 param_1: CLOCKS=YES param_2: ATD-GAIN=15 param_3: CR-SPLIT=NO comment_1: STAR WILL BE SATURATED. linenum: 1.500 sequence_1: DEFINE sequence_2: IMAGES1 targname: HD39060 config: WFPC2 opmode: IMAGE aperture: PC1-FIX sp_element: F439W num_exp: 1 time_per_exp: 9.0M s_to_n: 1 fluxnum_1: 1 priority: 1 param_1: CLOCKS=YES param_2: ATD-GAIN=15 param_3: CR-SPLIT=NO comment_1: STAR WILL BE SATURATED. linenum: 2.100 sequence_1: DEFINE sequence_2: IMAGES2 targname: HD39060 config: WFPC2 opmode: IMAGE aperture: PC1-FIX sp_element: F555W num_exp: 1 time_per_exp: 40.0S s_to_n: 1 fluxnum_1: 1 priority: 1 param_1: CLOCKS=YES param_2: ATD-GAIN=15 param_3: CR-SPLIT=NO comment_1: STAR WILL BE SATURATED. linenum: 2.200 sequence_1: DEFINE sequence_2: IMAGES2 targname: HD39060 config: WFPC2 opmode: IMAGE aperture: PC1-FIX sp_element: F555W num_exp: 2 time_per_exp: 4.0M s_to_n: 1 fluxnum_1: 1 priority: 1 param_1: CLOCKS=YES param_2: ATD-GAIN=15 param_3: CR-SPLIT=NO comment_1: STAR WILL BE SATURATED. linenum: 2.300 sequence_1: DEFINE sequence_2: IMAGES2 targname: HD39060 config: WFPC2 opmode: IMAGE aperture: PC1-FIX sp_element: F814W num_exp: 1 time_per_exp: 5.0M s_to_n: 1 fluxnum_1: 1 priority: 1 param_1: CLOCKS=YES param_2: ATD-GAIN=15 param_3: CR-SPLIT=NO comment_1: STAR WILL BE SATURATED. linenum: 2.400 sequence_1: DEFINE sequence_2: IMAGES2 targname: HD39060 config: WFPC2 opmode: IMAGE aperture: PC1-FIX sp_element: F439W num_exp: 1 time_per_exp: 9.0M s_to_n: 1 fluxnum_1: 1 priority: 1 param_1: CLOCKS=YES param_2: ATD-GAIN=15 param_3: CR-SPLIT=NO comment_1: STAR WILL BE SATURATED. ! linenum: 10.000 sequence_1: USE sequence_2: IMAGES1 req_1: CYCLE 4; req_2: SEQ 1.1-1.5 NO GAP; req_3: ORIENT 297D +/- 5D; req_4: POS TARG -14.1,-14.3; req_5: GROUP 10-12 NO GAP comment_1: ORIENT CAN ALSO BE 117D. linenum: 11.000 sequence_1: USE sequence_2: IMAGES2 req_1: CYCLE 4; req_2: SEQ 2.1-2.4 NO GAP; req_3: ORIENT 20D +/- 10D FROM 10; req_4: POS TARG -14.1,-14.3 comment_1: MUST OCCUR DURING SAME comment_2: VISIT AS LINE 10. linenum: 12.000 sequence_1: USE sequence_2: IMAGES2 req_1: CYCLE 4; req_2: SEQ 2.1-2.4 NO GAP; req_3: ORIENT -20D +/- 10D FROM 10; req_4: POS TARG -14.1,-14.3 comment_1: MUST OCCUR DURING SAME comment_2: VISIT AS LINE 10. ! end of exposure logsheet !
