We are proposing to use the PC to map the line_6: distributions of blue stragglers in seven globular clusters of line_7: systematically increasing central density. line_8: Our goals are to determine and to compare the numbers, mean masses and line_9: distributions of the blue stragglers in globulars of widely differing line_10: central density. These observational results will be used to test line_11: theoretical predictions and numerical simulations of stellar density line_12: distributions and stellar collision rates in globular cluster cores. line_13: The proposed observations demand high spatial resolution imaging of line_14: moderately bright point sources near 3000 Angstroms...exactly what line_15: HST does best. Most of the target clusters are in, or close to, HST's line_16: Continuous Viewing Zone. Thus the proposed observations can make high line_17: efficiency use of HST time. In the event of a serious PC failure, line_18: (e.g. worsening contamination for the F284W filter) these observations line_19: can be carried out with the F439W filter of the PC, or with the F220W line_20: and F150W filters with FOC by doubling the allocated observing time. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: SHARA fname: MICHAEL title: PI mi: M. inst: ST SCI country: USA ! lname: PARESCE fname: FRANCESCO mi: F. inst: ST SCI country: USA esa: Y ! lname: MEYLAN fname: GEORGES mi: C. inst: ST SCI country: USA esa: Y ! lname: KING fname: IVAN mi: R. inst: UC BERKELEY country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: Eleven fields in 4 globular clusters are to be imaged with the PC. line_2: Three images, with each of the F336W and the F439W filters, will line_3: be obtained to produce color magnitude diagrams to identify blue line_4: stragglers. Several frame centers on the more extended clusters line_5: are required to reach out several core radii from the globulars' line_6: centers. This is needed to obtain the gradient in numbers of blue line_7: stragglers. NO PREFLASH IS REQUIRED, the clusters provide it. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: This project demands high angular resolution to separate the line_2: blue stragglers from the myriad of red giants, subgiants and main line_3: sequence stars near the cores of globular clusters. ! ! question: 9 section: 1 line_1: P2472 Shara, P.I. and Paresce Co-I line_2: Interacting Binary Stars in the Cores of Globular Clusters line_3: Six hours of HST/FOC time to search for large-amplitude variables line_4: (>0.3 mag) in the globular NGC 6752. line_6: Data successfully taken and being analyzed. ! question: 10 section: 1 line_1: STScI will supply full salaries of Shara and Paresce. line_2: The requested salary is to support a Science Data Analyst to line_3: assist with the large bulk of data reductions. Our experience is line_4: that 2 weeks is required to carefully sum pairs or triples of line_5: images, remove cosmic rays, extract and match up catalogs of stars, line_6: perform photometry and generate CMDs for a single field. line_7: Allowing for a two month training period, vacation, etc, the image line_8: reductions should require about 1 year of SDA time. The comparisons line_9: between different fields and between different clusters will line_10: require at least 4 man-months effort. Finally, the SDA will work line_11: for about 8 months with the co-Is on matching the observed blue line_12: straggler frequencies and distributions to calculated and line_13: simulated cluster core collision rates and straggler formation line_14: rates. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: SHARA fname: MICHAEL mi: M. category: PI inst: ST SCI addr_1: 3700 SAN MARTIN DRIVE city: BALTIMORE state: MD zip: 21218 country: USA phone: 410-338-4743 telex: 410-338-5090 ! ! end of general_form_address records fixed_targets: targnum: 1 name_1: NGC6093-CORE name_2: M80-CORE descr_1: C,201,910 pos_1: RA=16H17M02.4S +/-0.1S, pos_2: DEC=-22D58'35" +/-1.0" equinox: 2000 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=17.3 +/-0.5,TYPE=F0V ! ! end of fixed targets !
