abstract:

    line_1:        This test performs the routine monitoring of the GHRS
    line_2:        detector dark noise. This proposal will provide the 
    line_3:        primary means of checking on health of the GHRS detector 
    line_4:        systems through frequent  monitoring of the background
    line_5:        count rate.

    line_1:        The basic goals of this test are long term trend analysis and
    line_2:        improvement of statistical accuracy.
    line_3:        Engineering mode PHOTOSCAN will be used: an integration
    line_4:        time of 10 seconds with 7 bins produces a readout every
    line_5:        70 seconds. It is necessary that each bin contain
    line_6:        consecutive 10 second integrations. 
    line_7:        8 of these observations yields 9.3 minutes of data.

    line_9:        The first 3 dark monitor proposals (1408, 2841, 4065) were 
    line_10:       run after a PMDB Change Request changed the spacing to 16.
    line_11:       When 4065 did not run as expected, the spacing error was 
    line_12:       re-discovered and corrected in proposal 5039.
    line_13:       SPACING=16 ensures 10 consecutive secs of dark data rather 
    line_14:       than 50 non-consecutive 0.2 s periods. (LES)

    line_2:        (Side 2) for Cycle 4. This test should run a total of 
    line_3:        18 times; once a month for each side starting in July 1994.

    line_5:        We have removed the scheduling requirements for execution of 
    line_6:        this test inside and outside the SAA. 
    line_7:
    line_8:        These are internal tests and do not require any special
    line_9:        pointing of the telescope. There is no carrousel motion.
