abstract:

    line_1:        This proposal will test the new commanding capability
    line_2:        of using more than just the two central target acquisition
    line_3:        diodes during the locate phase of a target acquisition.
    line_4:        An extended object will be acquired and the fine
    line_5:        x-balancing will be done with 2, 4, 6, and 8 diodes to

    line_1:        The goal of this test is to exercise the new commanding
    line_2:        capability that permits a better fine x-centering
    line_3:        during the locate phase of a target acquistion (or
    line_4:        during an ACQ/PEAKUP.) The locate phase first centers
    line_5:        the object in y: first coarse, then fine. The locate phase
    line_6:        next centers in x; again in two steps: coarse and fine.
    line_7:        During the coarse balance the GHRS attempts to position the
    line_8:        object such that the 4th target acquistion diode is recording
    line_9:        the greatest flux (there are 8 target acquisition diodes.)
    line_10:       Previously, the second step was to use two deflection steps
    line_11:       to move the object toward diode 5--stopping when diode 5
    line_12:       recorded the greatest flux. The object was then effectively
    line_13:       centered when the flux was balanced between diodes 4 and 5.
    line_14:       With the new commanding we now have the ability to specify
    line_15:       using diode 4 vs. diode 5 or the sum of diodes 3 and 4
    line_16:       vs. the sum of diodes 5 and 6 or the sum of diodes 2 and
    line_17:       3 and 4 vs., etc. during the fine centering.
    line_18:       This should improve our ability to properly center extended
    line_19:       objects.
