The HST resolution (0.1" = 0.025 pc) offers detail line_4: hitherto poorly studied in the extragalactic context on the morphology and line_5: spatial relationships in various ISM processes associated with the evolution of line_6: Population I and Population II systems. The primary line_3: pointings of HST in the Magellanic Clouds will provide the basis for this line_4: project. If an object of interest occurs within the WFC field at line_5: any roll angle, an emission line image in a narrow band and line_6: continuum image in a broad band filter will be requested. The targets of line_7: interest cover a broad range - to ensure a strong probability of obtaining line_8: images - from proto-stellar regions, through HII regions, supernova line_9: remnants, shells and supershells to evolved objects around high mass stars line_10: to planetary nebulae. Depending on the object and the exposure time of the line_11: primary pointing, a variety of emission line and continuum images will line_12: be taken. line_14: The program relies heavily on the primary pointings which clearly will line_15: differ from cycle to cycle. However we do not expect our methods or line_16: proposed targets to change substantially from year to year. On the basis of line_17: our Phase 2 Cycle 2 planning, there were about 40 hours of FOS and FOC line_18: pointings in the Magellanic Clouds, from which we selected the most line_19: promising fields (eliminating short primary exposures), giving 34.1 hours of line_20: parallel imaging. In this Cycle (4) we find 13 hours of high priority line_21: imaging. Similar estimates hold for further cycles dependant line_22: on the pattern of primary observations. Over the envisaged lifetime line_23: of this program, a potentially valuable archive of ~400 images of Magellanic ! question: 3 section: 2 line_1: Cloud nebulae will accrue. line_3: From the Cycle 2 and 3 Phase 2 exercises and what we have learnt in the line_4: scheduling process of Cycle 2+3, we have developed the following strategy: line_5: 1. An image in an emission line filter and a nearby continuum filter are line_6: requested in groups. The continuum filter is for PSF determination line_7: over the field at the same epoch (to guard against time variations of line_8: PSF) and for distinguishing emission line objects. (Ideally we want to line_9: specify GROUP NOGAP to ensure that line and continuum images are taken line_10: close in time. However we are advised that since GROUP NOGAP implies line_11: two images per orbit, this requirement may prejudice the chance of line_12: scheduling parallel exposures when the primary instrument is FOS. We line_13: request that: THE EMISSION LINE AND CONTINUUM line_14: FILTER IMAGE EXPOSURES BE KEPT AS CLOSE TOGETHER IN line_15: TIME AS POSSIBLE, constistent with other constraints.) line_16: 2. The grouped emission line and continuum filter images are line_17: repeated within the available primary exposure time. The scientific returns increase in proportion to the increased line_3: resolution since greater structural detail is resolvable. For example the line_4: closer nebular emission is resolved to a star the lower its derived line_5: kinematic age for stellar ejecta. From the ground the best resolution that line_6: can routinely be assumed is 0.5 arcsec. For the smallest objects, high line_7: resolution reduces limits on the size to ~5 times lower than ground-based line_8: data whilst for the large extended objects a ~25 times increase in areal line_9: resolution is achievable. To the extent that this program only comes into line_10: its own with the spatial resolution provided by HST imaging, it has not line_11: been pursued from the ground. However many of the proposers have a strong line_12: involvement in Schmidt photographic surveys and CCD imaging of Magellanic line_13: Cloud phenomena as well as spectroscopy of nebulae. The deep, large scale line_14: imaging of the Magellanic Clouds forms an integral forerunner to the line_15: program outlined and much of the basis for the parallel pointings. ! question: 4 section: 2 line_1: The exposure times are dictated by the primary pointings so we restrict the line_2: exposure justification to showing that in typical cases useful line_3: signal-to-noise can be achieved. We have constructed a target list based line_4: on the fluxes of known objects or on useful limits to magnitudes and line_5: fluxes consistent with the scientific aims pursued. We have used the line_6: exposure time calculation given in the WFPC2 Manual, with encircled line_7: energy over 4 pixels for point sources and per pixel for extended sources, line_8: although in reality there may be unresolved emission line features. line_9: For all the faint targets to be studied, read-out noise line_10: dominates background light (except for knots or stars embedded in bright line_11: emission). We have only considered use of Wide Field Camera but in the line_12: cases when a small object is favourably located for the Planetary Camera or line_13: the general field containing a brighter extended object, we would also line_14: consider use of the Planetary Camera. Since the area covered by the PC is line_15: lower than for WFC, this gives a lower probability of obtaining parallel line_16: images of the targets of interest; however the smaller pixels would benefit line_17: study of compact sources (such as VLE nebulae and planetary nebulae).
