This information is line_3: necessary for correctly calculating coordinates used in line_4: WFPC2 assisted target acquisition with the small-aperture line_5: science instruments and for calibrating WFPC2 astrometric line_6: performance. The target field is observed at several line_7: overlapping positions so that many stellar separations of line_8: various sizes and position angles can be measured in line_9: different regions of each CCD. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: GILMOZZI fname: ROBERTO inst: STSCI country: USA ! lname: KINNEY fname: ELLYNE inst: STSCI country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: This calibration is crucial for supporting the WFPC2 assisted line_2: target acquisitions. It is expected that the WFPC2 will line_3: display a substantial geometrical distortion, similar to that line_4: of WF/PC, which would impair any astrometry performed with line_5: it. Measurements intended for subsequent "blind offsets" with line_6: other, small aperture instruments would be particularly line_7: affected. Gilmozzi and White (1991) have shown that it is line_8: possible to remove the distortion down to a level of 0.01". line_9: This type of correction has been successfully applied to line_10: WF/PC, and was used to calculate positions for WF/PC assisted line_11: target acquistions and to produce geometrically correct line_12: mosaics of WF/PC observations. This proposal calibrates the line_13: field of view for the three WF chips and the PC chip. To do line_14: so we plan to observe a moderately crowded globular cluster line_15: in the LMC (NGC1850). The telescope will take an exposure at ! question: 3 section: 2 line_1: 10 different positions within the cluster so as to have the line_2: same group of stars in each quadrant and in the center of line_3: the chip. Comparing the relative positions of the stars in line_4: each sector will yield the relative distortion between line_5: sectors, which will then be tied together in the central, line_6: overlapping area. The outcome of this proposal will be a line_7: two-dimensional polynomial which will be used to correct the line_8: x,y coordinates of each chip. The observations will be line_9: performed in the F569W filter. However, we will check for line_10: wavelength dependence of the distortion by taking images in line_11: F160BW, F439W and F791W. The use of the same target as in the line_12: study of WF/PC will allow us to compare the distortions of line_13: the WF/PC to the distortions of the WFPC2. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: Instrument calibration. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: The prerequsites for this is a calibration activity line_2: are that the final telescope focus and collimation be line_3: adopted and the observation should be taken in the CVZ. ! question: 6 section: 1 line_1: Avoid the SAA for all exposures. ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: These data will be analyzed at STScI and the results will line_2: be part of the ScI calibration data base and will be included line_3: in WFPC2 Instrument Handbook. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: GILMOZZI fname: ROBERTO category: PI inst: STSCI ! lname: KINNEY fname: ELLYNE category: CON inst: STSCI addr_1: 3700 SAN MARTIN DR city: BALTIMORE state: MD zip: 21218 country: USA phone: (410)338-4516 ! ! end of general_form_address records fixed_targets: targnum: 1 name_1: NGC1850 descr_1: J,701 pos_1: RA = 05H 08M 59S +/-1.0S, pos_2: DEC = -68D 49' 24" +/- 5.0" equinox: 1950 ! ! end of fixed targets !
