Date: Fri Feb 9 11:56:46 EST 1996 Proposal_Information Title: FLICKERING AS A PROBE OF ACCRETION DISK STRUCTURE Proposal_Category: GO Scientific_Category: HOT STARS,ERUPTIVE BINARIES Cycle: 4 Investigators PI_Name: HORNE, KEITH PI_Institution: Abstract: We will use the FOS in RAPID mode (<3.2s time resolution) to record light curves, spectra, power spectra, and wavelength-to-wavelength correlations in a study of flickering accretion disks in 3 bright cataclysmic variables. An enigmatic signature of accretion, flickering is probably a key to the poorly understood mechanism of accretion disk viscosity. Characterizing flickering properties over a wide range of wavelengths sensing different physical conditions at different radii in the disk will constrain flickering mechanisms and test the specific prediction that flickering occurs on the Keplerian timescale at each radius in the disk. Optical light senses a superposition of flickering from all disk radii, while UV light isolates flickering from the hotter inner regions. A standard steady-state disk model, predicts a break in the flickering power spectrum at a timescale proportional to wavelength squared and to the square root of the mass accretion rate. IUE's long-term monitoring campaigns searched for this effect in Seyfert galaxies, where the expected Kepler timescale is days to weeks, but the disk predictions were not confirmed -- the Seyfert's optical and ultraviolet continua varied synchronously. Does this mean that Seyfert's don't possess disks? Our experiment will discover if the disk predictions hold up for flickering in cataclysmic variables, where we know disks are present.
