These observations were very successful. The spectra enabled us LINE_3:to study the stellar winds of five stars, deriving mass-loss rates and LINE_4:velocity laws from wind line-profile fitting with the SEI method, and LINE_5:information on the abundances. In all stars we find differences between LINE_6:M31 and the Milky Way, suggesting global differences in the star LINE_7:formation history. Interstellar extinction curves were derived within LINE_8:M31, and the galactic and M31 ISM absorption lines could be separated LINE_9:by the high rotation velocity of M31. This work needs to be extended to LINE_10:more stars, at different locations in M31 (to test for dependence on LINE_11:galactocentric distance), to different spectral types, and to stars in LINE_12:the other major galaxy of the Local Group, M33. We propose to obtain LINE_13:FOS spectra of a carefully selected group of hot stars in these LINE_14: galaxies. For the new selected targets we have accurate spectral types LINE_15: from our ground based high resolution, high S/N spectra, ground-based LINE_16: optical photometry and UV flux levels known from either IUE spectra LINE_17:or UIT photometry. Targets are selected in uncrowded regions, to avoid LINE_18:acquisition problems and UV flux contamination from companions. The LINE_4:targets are selected from the brightest and hottest stars known in these LINE_5:galaxies. We have optical CCD photometry and spectra, and low resolution LINE_6:IUE spectra and UIT UV photometry that allow us to establish the LINE_7:spectral type, luminosity class and to compute FOS exposure times. LINE_8:We require the mean S/N in the G130H range to be not less than 20 per LINE_9:resolution element. Each exposure may be split into several integrations, LINE_10:that will be co-added to reach the required S/N. The targets are chosen LINE_11:to be isolated, so as to avoid acquisition and interpretation problems. LINE_12:The binary acquisition worked perfectly in the Cycle 1 observations LINE_13:with the 1 arcsec aperture.
