abstract:

    line_1:        HST will be able to reveal the morphologies and UV properties of the general
    line_2:        galaxy population at cosmological distances. This data is fundamental to our
    line_3:        understanding of galaxy evolution, it is inaccessible from the ground, and will
    line_4:        convincingly descriminate between the current models of evolution. Although
    line_5:        this data is essential for settling the major questions about evolution it has
    line_6:        not yet been forthcoming from the HST.
    line_7:        By targeting our deepest redshift survey we can immediately relate the
    line_8:        precious high resolution image information to redshift.  The aim of this
    line_9:        proposal is to establish the general morphologies and the frequency of
    line_10:       interacation at <z>=0.5 from the images in the I band, and to use UV images to
    line_11:       derive the redshift dependence of star formation and its location in galaxies.
    line_12:       Our redshift survey is complete to B=24 for 142 galaxies with 0.2<z<0.8, and
    line_13:       BVRIK mags. The galaxies are in strips of 2'x10' matched to the width of the
    line_14:       WFPC2 field, corresponding to a factor 14 saving in TIME over an equivalent
    line_15:       unconcentrated sample or only 11.7 hours of imaging.
    line_16:       We have combined our experience of analysing WFPC1 images in the presence of
    line_17:       the high cosmic ray count in space, uneven A2D behaviour, together with our
    line_18:       knowledge of the selection effects operating at faint magnitudes, to make
    line_19:       maximum likelihood estimates of the image parameters we can expect to derive
    line_20:       with WFPC2.

    line_1:        We have asked for imaging in 3 filters in 6 positions, so that there are 3
    line_2:        images in F225W, 2 image in F336W and 5 images in F814W. The 6 positions are
    line_3:        in two close groups of 3 positions, i.e. 2 fields which are 3 hours apart in
    line_4:        RA. We would request all images to be offset by 0.5'' in both RA and DEC,
    line_5:        respectively, to avoid bad pixels and/or columns. There is no requirement that
    line_6:        the images in different positions be taken consecutively but it would be
    line_7:        preferable to have all the exposures at one position taken at the same tame
    line_8:        since specific orientations have been asked for at each position.
