Stellar evolution theory predicts that specific elements can line_4: have dramatically different nucleosynthetic histories and so studying line_5: the gas phase abundances of such elements in both the Milky Way and line_6: other galaxies provides important information on both stellar and line_7: subsequently galactic evolution. We propose a study to produce high line_8: quality abundance data for the undepleted heavy element Kr (Z = 36) line_9: toward six stars representing three distinctly different galactic line_10: directions. Our main focus here is the abundance of Kr I primarily line_11: because it is a noble gas and is therefore not expected to be depleted line_12: onto dust. Thus, unlike all other heavier-than-Zn elements, measures line_13: of Kr constitute a direct probe of the cosmic abundance. Variability line_14: in the abundance of Kr therefore yields a direct probe of line_15: nucleosynthetic enrichment and the efficiency with which this material line_16: is mixed in the interstellar gas. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: CARDELLI fname: JASON title: PI mi: A. inst: UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN country: USA ! lname: MEYER fname: DAVID mi: M. inst: NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY country: USA esa: N ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: We propose to observed 6 stars at the principal wavelength 1246 using line_2: grating G160M. All observations will be made using the SSA and a line_3: sampling strategy of four substeps per diode. The requested observations line_4: will allow us to obtain high quality data for Ge II 1237.1 and Kr I line_5: 1235.8. In addition, the wavelength coverage afforded by G160M will line_6: also give us good data for the weak doublet of Mg II 1239.9,1240.4 and line_7: other diagnostic lines down to 1264. Since the lines we desire to line_8: observe will be relatively weak, we require high signal-to-noise data line_9: which can be easily obtained using G160M and the SSA. In order to line_10: achieve this, each requested observation will employ the command line_11: FP-SPLIT=4. Also, since our program stars are bright, we must split line_12: out observations into a suitable number of subexposures so as to not line_13: overflow the maximum count of 65,536 per accumulation bin. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: CARDELLI fname: JASON mi: A. category: PI inst: University of Wisconsin addr_1: DEPARTMENT OF ASTRONOMY addr_2: 475 N.
