Even in this optimum case, however, the important structures line_7: are within a few arcsec of the nucleus, and HST resoution is needed to line_8: trace the interaction in detail. We have already obtained a deep HST line_9: \[OIII\] image and a deep VLA 3.6 cm radio map, and these confirm the line_10: exceptional nature of MKN 78 as a laboratory for understanding the line_11: jet-ISM interaction. To complete our original HST proposal, we now line_12: ask for HST FOS spectra of several carefully chosen locations in the line_13: MKN 78 nebulosity. These will provide the crucial kinematic and line_14: physical information needed to converge on a detailed and unambiguous line_15: physical picture of the expanding radio source and its interaction line_16: with the circumnuclear gas. line_18: We note that at dec +65, MKN 78 is ideally placed within the CVZ line_19: (though we do not REQUIRE continuous viewing). ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: WHITTLE fname: MARK inst: 3730 country: USA ! lname: WILSON fname: ANDREW mi: S. inst: 3470 country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: ! question: 3 section: 1 line_1: Observing sequence : Complete all red side observations line_2: before doing blue side. ACQ/BINARY and ACQ/PEAK at line_3: offset star. Go to first target aperture. Take IMAGE (in ACQ line_4: mode). Start with G400H then G780H then wavelength calibration line_5: for a sequence of G570H exposures going around 10 aperture line_6: locations. Return to 3 apertures for other gratings. line_7: After completing red side. Sideswitch to blue. Return to offset line_8: star. Repeat above for blue exposures (five locations only). line_9: ************** ( Copy from phase I now follows) ************* line_10: Using our PC [OIII] image of MKN 78, we have defined 10 line_11: locations for FOS aperture placement. These include the line_12: bright inner [OIII] knots, the fainter outer [OIII] knots, line_13: a pure but near nuclear [OIII] plateau, and the nucleus line_14: itself in the [OIII] dark zone. We will take exposures line_15: of 4 -- 24 mins (depending on the aperture) using grating line_16: G570H to track the [OIII]$\lambda5007$ kinematics in the line_17: various components. These spectra will also give H$\beta$ and line_18: [OI]$\lambda6300$ from which some excitation information line_19: can be derived. At five aperture locations (both bright line_20: [OIII] knots, two fainter knots, and the plateau) we will line_21: also take spectra using G190H, G400H, G780H to obtain UV line_22: and optical diagnostic lines (exposure times vary depending line_23: on aperture and grating). From these we can estimate a wide ! question: 3 section: 2 line_1: range of physical parameters for the ionized gas which, when line_2: combined with our radio data, will give considerable insights line_3: into the nature of the radio --- emission line interaction line_4: (see scientific justification). In all, we ask for 25 line_5: different spectra with total exposure time 8.5 hr (12.4 hr line_6: spacecraft time). line_7: We will use an offset star measured using our PC image for line_8: `early aquisition'. line_9: We also note that at a Declination of +65, MKN 78 is line_10: ideally placed in the center of the CVZ. We do NOT, line_11: however, request CVZ time on SCIENTIFIC grounds. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: Typical sizes of linear double or triple radio structures in line_2: Seyfert galaxies are about 0.1 - 3 arcsec. To understand the line_3: interaction of the radio ejecta with the emission line gas, line_4: we {\underbar {must}} spatially resolve these scales. line_5: ********* line_6: We have pursued long-slit and line-imaging of Seyfert galaxies line_7: to the limit of ground based resolution. The study by line_8: Whittle {\it et al.} (1988 ApJ 326 125) used a 0.63 arcsec line_9: square pixels in $\sim$1.5 arcsec seeing and 45 km s$^{-1}$ line_10: resolution. More recently, Whittle and Wilson obtained CFHT line_11: spectra of MKN 78 in about 1 arcsec seeing and 0.4 arcsec line_12: pixels, including [OIII]$\lambda5007$, H$\alpha$, line_13: [OI]$\lambda6300$, and [SII]$\lambda\lambda6717,6731$. line_14: Even with this good seeing, the velocity components from line_15: individual knots are blended and obtaining a clear set of line_16: line ratios is quite difficult. The jump to 0.1 arcsec line_17: resolution and the ability to isolate individual knots would line_18: be a critical improvement. line_19: Similarly, we have pushed narrow band imaging of Seyferts to line_20: the limit of ground based conditions --- using the University line_21: of Hawaii 88 inch telescope on Mauna Kea (Haniff, Wilson and line_22: Ward 1988 ApJ {\bf 344} 104, 10 objects), also with the Image line_23: Stabilization Instrument System (ISIS) to further reduce the ! question: 4 section: 2 line_1: effective seeing (Whittle {\it et al.} 1986 MN {\bf 222} 189). line_2: Once again, the restrictions imposed by seeing are critical, line_3: and prevent a detailed pursuit of the emission line -- radio line_4: link. We have also pursued high resolution radio imaging of line_5: MKN78 using the VLA. We chose 3.6 cm giving 0.15 - 0.28 arcsec line_6: resolution (uniform $-$ natural weights). If awarded HST time line_7: we would attempt a 1.3 cm map of MKN 78 with 0.07 arcsec line_8: resolution with the aim of deriving a spectral index distribution. line_9: *********************** line_10: In summary, until the limits imposed by ground based seeing line_11: are overcome, it is unlikely that substantial further progress line_12: will be made in the study of the interaction of radio ejecta line_13: with line emitting material in the nuclear regions of Seyfert line_14: galaxies. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: Our target, MKN 78, lies within the CVZ region. NOTE that we do line_2: NOT need continuous viewing on scientific grounds, and our line_3: program has NOT been designated a CVZ program. Nevertheless, line_4: some savings in spacecraft time would be realised if our line_5: program were executed in continuous viewing mode. ! question: 6 section: 1 line_1: None (think about this for wavelength cals) ! ! ! question: 8 section: 1 line_1: We intend to use our existing HST PC image to provide line_2: `Early Aquisition' information. There is a $\sim14$ mag line_3: star in the PC field for which we have accurate offsets line_4: (about 40 arcsec) to our first FOS aperture. We then line_5: use accurate offsets to go to our other aperture locations. ! question: 9 section: 1 line_1: Cycle 1, GO 2493, ``Narrow Band Imaging of Markarian 78'', line_2: M Whittle and A Wilson.
