We seek to discover whether the bulges of these line_4: galaxies are relatively young, of order 10 Gyr rather than 15 Gyr. line_5: We will use WFPC2 and the R, I, and F1042M (1 micron) filters. line_6: Knowing that F1042M falls on the first continuum point of M giants, we have line_7: shown that we can use 1.04 micron fluxes to reliably calculate bolometric line_8: magnitudes for these very red stars. Color information from R and I will permit line_9: (1) comparison with Galactic bulge M giants, (2) an estimate of the spread of line_10: abundance and (3) increase the accuracy of the bolometric magnitudes. Frames line_11: with the damaged HST show signs of resolution to within 3" of the M31 nucleus; line_12: Red images with the aberrated HST show a red star cluster associated with the line_13: nucleus. Ground-based studies of M32 find an intermediate-age population from line_14: spectroscopy and infrared photometry. The repaired HST should resolve stars line_15: close to the nuclei of these galaxies.
