There is strong evidence, based on available data line_4: from the ground, that these structures are the result of line_5: gravitational lensing of a faint blue background galaxy or line_6: galaxies by the cluster's deep potential well. The observational line_7: goal will be to map the variations in surface brightness and line_8: color within the arcs (which are typically about 1 arc second line_9: wide and several to ten arc seconds long). Because lensing line_10: preserves both quantities, these maps will provide strong line_11: additional constraints on detailed models of the event. The line_12: ultimate scientific goals would be to uniquely determine, or at line_13: least tightly constrain, the total (including dark) mass line_14: distribution in the cluster and to invert the lensing distortion line_15: to obtain a very high spatial resolution image of the distant line_16: background galaxies courtesy of this natural (Zwicky) telescope. line_17: For a variety of reasons, the Cl0024+16 system is among the line_18: most favorable cases for such a study among known luminous arc line_19: lens systems. If successful, such studies might profitably be line_20: extended to a few other objects in the future. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: TURNER fname: EDWIN inst: 3200 country: USA ! lname: TYSON fname: J. In order to obtain optimum line_3: correction for systematic flat field errors and thus go as faint in line_4: surface brightness as possible, we will employ three slightly line_5: different pointings (offsets of perhaps 10") through each filter. The line_6: exposures will also be split for cosmic ray removal. Experience with line_7: 10-orbit Medium Deep Survey images shows that the control of such line_8: systematic sources of error are essential for work at very faint levels. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: As described in the Scientific Justification, the requirement of line_2: high angular resolution is the primary reason for using HST. Extensive line_3: ground based observations have revealed substructure in the arcs but line_4: with only marginal resolution, particularly in the direction line_5: across to the arc. Also, at ground based resolutions, the structure line_6: is confused with that of nearby (in the sky) cluster galaxies in many line_7: places. The scientific goal of the project (see section 2) depend line_8: critically on obtaining the highest possible angular resolution images line_9: of the arcs and arclets. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: None. ! question: 6 section: 1 line_1: None. ! ! question: 8 section: 1 line_1: As noted in section 2 (and see Fig. 2), Dressler and his collaborators line_2: have supplied us with a deep red image of Cl0024+16 obtained with line_3: WFPC1 for the purpose of studying the morphology of cluster members. line_4: Although it is not directly useful for our purposes, it does provide a line_5: quite useful guide for planning our observations and may give us some line_6: useful additional color data. line_8: We would plan to make our Cl0024+16 images available to Dressler et al. line_9: to use in their study of the cluster's blue galaxy population. Moreover, line_10: if these projects continue in future cycles, we expect to be able to line_11: usefully share data on other clusters. ! question: 9 section: 1 line_1: HST MEDIUM-DEEP SURVEY (P-3917), R.
