We have selected 7 QSOs background to line_4: galaxies with which to study the Lya, MgII and C~IV absorption line_5: cross-sections of modern-day galaxies using HST and the FOS. This number will line_6: provide a statistically significant set of sightlines through the disks and line_7: haloes of many types of galaxies situated in many types of environment. The line_8: number studied and the equivalent width limits achieved will facilitate a line_9: direct comparison with higher-redshift optical studies. We will also provide line_10: important information on the question of how galaxies contribute to the Lya line_11: forest lines now found at all redshifts. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: BOWEN fname: DAVID title: PI mi: V. inst: 3470 country: U.S.A. esa: N ! lname: BLADES fname: CHRIS inst: 3470 country: U.S.A. esa: N ! lname: TYTLER fname: DAVID inst: 1562 country: U.S.A. esa: N ! lname: LANZETTA fname: KENNETH inst: 1562 country: U.S.A. esa: N ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: We have selected 7 QSOs behind low-redshift galaxies. Exposure times line_2: are based on obtaining 3 sigma equivalent width limits of 0.3A or better at the line_3: better at the wavelength of the expected CIV/MgII absorption. Lya will line_4: also be detected at larger equivalent width limits, usually ~0.5A. line_5: Fluxes for 5 of 7 QSOs are known from IUE spectra, so the exposure line_6: times for these data should be correct. Though sub-steps of 4 will be line_7: used, the equivalent width limits are based on values after rebinning line_8: to 2 pixels/diode. For QSOs without known fluxes, exposure times are based line_9: on published V mags and assumption of a power law with alpha=-1. Background line_10: count rate of 0.01 counts/sec/diode is used. Count rates are calculated f line_11: from efficiency curves available on STEIS, and transmission of 0.9 is as line_12: used for 1.0 aperture. line_14: ACQ/BINARY has been selected for QSOs with known fluxes and exp. times line_15: calculated using software available to the FOS Instrument Scientists. line_16: For QSOs without known fluxes, a 3 stage ACQ/PEAKUP has been chosen, line_17: using the 4.3, the 1.0 and the 0.5 apertures. Scans of 3x1, 6x2 and 3x3 line_18: have been selected for each aperture respectively. SCAN-STEPS have been line_19: taken from the examples in thr FOS manual. line_21: 4 of the QSOs are side switched, such that the QSO is acquired, observed line_22: with one grating/detector then switched to the other grating/detector. ! question: 3 section: 2 line_1: ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: 4 of the QSOs are side-switched, such that the QSO ia acquired, observed line_2: with one detector/grating then observed immediately after with the other line_3: detector/grating. This means that these small subgroups should be observed line_4: in sequence. This requirement has been entered on the exposure logsheets. ! question: 6 section: 1 line_1: ! ! question: 8 section: 1 line_1: ! question: 9 section: 1 line_1: ! question: 10 section: 1 line_1: ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: BOWEN fname: DAVID category: PI inst: 3470 addr_1: 3700 SAN MARTIN DRIVE city: BALTIMORE state: MD zip: 21218 country: USA phone: 410-515-4889 telex: bowen@stsci.edu ! ! end of general_form_address records fixed_targets: targnum: 1 name_1: 1543+489 descr_1: E, 313 pos_1: RA = 15H 45M 30.27S +/- 0.5", pos_2: DEC = 48D 46' 08.7" +/- 0.5", pos_3: plate-id=00T9 equinox: 2000.0 rv_or_z: Z = 0.40 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V = 16.8 fluxnum_2: 2 fluxval_2: F-CONT(1500) = 0.2E-14 ! targnum: 2 name_1: 0955+326 descr_1: E, 313 pos_1: RA = 09H 58M 21.0 S +/- 0.5", pos_2: DEC = 32D 24' 01.9"+/- 0.5", pos_3: plate-id=01RS equinox: 2000.0 rv_or_z: Z = 0.533 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V = 15.8 fluxnum_2: 2 fluxval_2: F-CONT(1500) = 0.5E-14 ! targnum: 3 name_1: 0026+129 descr_1: E, 313 pos_1: RA = 00H 29M 13.75S +/- 0.5", pos_2: DEC = 13D 16' 3.7" +/- 0.5" equinox: 2000.0 rv_or_z: Z = 0.142 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V = 15.7 fluxnum_2: 2 fluxval_2: F-CONT(1220)=2.5E-14 fluxnum_3: 3 fluxval_3: F-CONT(1558)=2.0E-14 ! targnum: 4 name_1: 0318-196 descr_1: E, 313 pos_1: RA = 03H 20M 21.15S +/- 0.5", pos_2: DEC = -19D 26' 31.7" +/- 0.5" equinox: 2000.0 rv_or_z: Z = 0.104 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V = 16 fluxnum_2: 2 fluxval_2: F-CONT(1500)=0.8E-14 fluxnum_3: 3 fluxval_3: F-CONT(2800)=0.3E-14 ! targnum: 5 name_1: 1219+047 descr_1: E, 313 pos_1: RA = 12H 21M 37.94S +/- 0.5", pos_2: DEC = +04D 30' 25.7" +/- 0.5" equinox: 2000.0 rv_or_z: Z = 0.094 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V = 16.8 ! targnum: 8 name_1: 1220+160 descr_1: E, 313 pos_1: RA = 12H 23M 30.82S +/- 0.5", pos_2: DEC = +15D 45' 07.9" +/- 0.5" equinox: 2000.0 rv_or_z: Z = 0.081 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V = 15.9 ! targnum: 9 name_1: 0454+0356 descr_1: E, 313 pos_1: RA = 04H 56M 47.18S +/- 0.5", pos_2: DEC = +04D 00' 53.1" +/- 0.5" equinox: 2000.0 rv_or_z: Z = 1.0345 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V = 16.5 fluxnum_2: 2 fluxval_2: F-CONT(3000) = 0.15E-14 ! ! end of fixed targets !
