Our HST program is aimed at PC observations of half a line_5: dozen galaxies at 0.6 < z < 0.8 and WFC observations of over 100 line_6: spectroscopically identified sources with I(AB) < 22.5 and with 0 < z < 1.2. line_7: The unique capabilities of HST will enable us to (a) determine bulge-to-disk line_8: ratios, (b) measure bulge and disk scale lengths and surface brightnesses, (c) line_9: identify compact companions and other evidence for interactions and mergers, line_10: and (d) detect structure such as spiral arms within disks so as to determine line_11: the nature of star-formation within normal high redshift galaxies. line_12: This will lead to an understanding of the evolution of the different line_13: morphological components in galaxies and, thus, an understanding of those line_14: physical process that have operated within and around typical galaxies line_15: and which have controlled their evolution since the time when the Universe line_16: was less than half of its present age. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: LILLY fname: SIMON mi: J inst: 4664 country: CANADA ! lname: HAMMER fname: FRANCOIS inst: 5468 country: FRANCE esa: Y ! lname: LE FEVRE fname: OLIVIER inst: 1640 country: USA ! lname: SCHADE fname: DAVID inst: 8014 country: UK esa: Y ! lname: CRAMPTON fname: DAVID inst: 4628 country: CANADA ! lname: TRESSE fname: LAURENCE inst: 5468 country: FRANCE esa: Y ! lname: HUDON fname: DANIEL inst: 4664 country: CANADA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: For each of four fields (two within each of two large survey areas), six single line_2: orbit (i.e. 6x1800-second) exposures will be made with all of the three WF and line_3: single PC channels of the WFPC2. line_5: For each of the four pointings, the PC channel will be centered on a galaxy line_6: with I(AB) < 21.5 lying between 0.6 < z < 0.8. The WF channels will sample the line_7: surrounding regions which will contain around 20 spectroscopically identified line_8: objects with I(AB) < 22.5 and 0.0 < z < 1.2. line_10: Acquisition will be blind. There are no telescope roll-angle constraints since line_11: the placement of the WF fields relative to the PC is not critical. No CR-split line_12: will be required for the CCD exposures. A small offset between exposures line_13: specified with POS-TARG will be used to aid in the removal of detector artifacts line_14: from the data. line_16: The F702W filter is preferred over F814W because the former is free of line_17: emission lines for redshifts 0.45 < z < 0.65, whereas the latter has line_18: H_BETA and [OIII] 5007 for 0.4 < z < 0.75. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: This HST program forms part of a comprehensive study of normal galaxies at line_2: 0 < z < 1 that we are pursuing using the CFHT and other facilities. line_3: This program has two aspects: (a) PC imaging of a few representative galaxies line_4: in a well-defined redshift (0.6 < z < 0.8) and luminosity range (with spectra line_5: like present-day Sc galaxies), to obtain the very best possible images of these line_6: galaxies, and (b) WFC imaging of a much larger number of galaxies with measured line_7: redshifts 0 < z < 1 which will be an essentially random selection from our line_8: deep spectroscopic survey. The aim here is to examine the statistics of line_9: bulge to disk ratios, spheroid and disk parameters, the incidence of companions line_10: etc. Four pointings, giving seven PC targets and about 80 other galaxies in the line_11: WFC areas is the minimum required to give stistical validity to any of our line_12: conclusions, given that at least two parameters (redshift and luminosity) line_13: need to be carefully controlled in drawing statistical conclusions from the line_14: sample. line_15: The simulations presented in the scientific justification used the information line_16: in the WFPC2 handbook, and specifically: read-noise of 7 e; sky brightness of line_17: R = 22.67 arcsec^-2 giving 0.07 e/s in each WF pixel and 0.015 e/s in each PC line_18: pixel, and dark current of 0.02 e/s per pixel. A surface brightness of R = 22.7 line_19: mag arcsec^-2 (c.f. Figure 3) thus has a S/N per pixel of 16 (WF) and 6 (PC). line_20: At R = 26.2 mag arcsec^-2, appropriate for distant galaxies at a radius line_21: of about 1 arcsec, the S/N per pixel are 0.8 and 0.25 respectively. Azimuthal line_22: summation in 0.1 arcsec annuli would improve the S/N by factors of 8 and 16 line_23: respectively, leading to S/N in profiles of order 5 at these radii ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: These observations are background limited so dark time is required. ! question: 6 section: 1 line_1: No special calibration is required, but best possible F702W flat line_2: is required ! ! question: 8 section: 1 line_1: There are no additional requirements. As noted above, F702W is much line_2: better than the "standard" F814W because it is not contaminated by emission line_3: lines for the key redshift range 0.45 < z < 0.65. ! question: 9 section: 1 line_1: P2365 Cycle 1 "HST imaging of ground-based ultra-deep survey fields" line_2: S.J. Lilly and L.L. Cowie line_3: P3543 Cycle 2 "Deep ultraviolet imaging" S.J. Lilly, L.L. Cowie and E.M. Hu. line_5: P2365: During the post-aberration Cycle 1 review, the emphasis was shifted, line_6: with the oncurrence of TAC, entirely on to the FOC part of the program, and line_7: the WFC part was dropped. This decision was based on the perception that the line_8: far-uv capabilities of the telescope were less impaired than the high line_9: resolution optical capabilities. The FOC observations were taken in 1992. line_10: The data have been reduced. Essentially all instrumental artifacts were line_11: removed despite problems with the intermittent background source which led line_12: to the rejection of about 20% of the data. Unfortunately, the sensitivity line_13: levelis such that no readily identifiable sources were detected. We are line_14: presently attempting to correlate the far-uv image with existing optical data. line_15: While we have been dissappointed by the poor sensitivity of the aberrated line_16: FOC for this program of deep ultraviolet imaging, these pointings did line_17: produce a significant fraction of the deepest data used in the HST Medium line_18: Deep Survey. line_20: P3543: No observations have been taken, or are scheduled, because of the line_21: power supply problem with the f/48 mode of the FOC ! question: 10 section: 1 line_1: Simon Lilly, Francois Hammer, Olivier Le Fevre and David Crampton all have line_2: full-time permanent positions in their institutions with office and line_3: secretarial support etc. They all have individual access to Sparc-10 class line_4: workstations, with IRAF, STSDAS etc installed. The P.I. has an NSERC grant line_5: of $45,000 p.a. (with no overhead) part of which will be used to support line_6: David Schade as a PDF in Toronto for two years from Fall 1993. The other line_7: major investigators also have individual research grants that are entirely line_8: adequate to support this research. line_10: The French and Canadian TACs have committed large amounts of CFHT line_11: observing time to the CFRS survey. In the last two years we have been line_12: awarded almost 40 nights. We also have access to the ESO, including the line_13: NTT, and, eventually, will have access to the VLT and Gemini. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: LILLY fname: SIMON mi: J category: PI inst: 4664 addr_1: DEPARTMENT OF ASTRONOMY addr_2: 60 ST GEORGE STREET city: TORONTO state: ON zip: M8X 2E4 country: CANADA phone: (416) 978-5186 telex: lilly@perceval.astro.utoronto.ca ! lname: category: CON ! ! end of general_form_address records fixed_targets: targnum: 1 name_1: FIELD-030243+001324 name_2: CFRS-03-480+488 descr_1: E,325 pos_1: RA = 03H 02M 42.44S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC = +00D 13' 23.7" +/- 1.0" equinox: 2000.00 pm_or_par: N rv_or_z: Z = 0.60 comment_1: FAINT GALAXY SURVEY FIELD fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=21.6 fluxnum_2: 2 fluxval_2: SURF(R)=26.2 ! targnum: 2 name_1: FIELD-030233+001255 name_2: CFRS-03-595+599 descr_1: E,325 pos_1: RA = 03H 02M 33.55S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC = +00D 12' 55.2" +/- 1.0" equinox: 2000.00 pm_or_par: N rv_or_z: Z = 0.61 comment_1: FAINT GALAXY SURVEY FIELD fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=21.9 fluxnum_2: 2 fluxval_2: SURF(R)=26.2 ! targnum: 3 name_1: FIELD-141743+523025 name_2: CFRS-14-1087+1139 name_3: 15V24-1139 descr_1: E,325 pos_1: RA = 14H 15M 58.57S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC = +52D 44' 11.7" +/- 1.0" equinox: 1950.00 pm_or_par: N rv_or_z: Z = 0.659 comment_1: FAINT GALAXY SURVEY FIELD fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=21.9 fluxnum_2: 2 fluxval_2: SURF(R)=26.2 ! targnum: 4 name_1: FIELD-141809+523015 name_2: CFRS-14-393 descr_1: E,325 pos_1: RA = 14H 16M 25.02S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC = +52D 44' 01.2" +/- 1.0" equinox: 1950.00 pm_or_par: N rv_or_z: Z = 0.600 comment_1: FAINT GALAXY SURVEY FIELD fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=21.5 fluxnum_2: 2 fluxval_2: SURF(R)=26.2 ! ! end of fixed targets !
