The near line_3: diffraction-limited HST PSF is uniquely suited to identifying compact line_4: structures. So far, HST observations of nuclei have been largely of elliptical line_5: galaxies, and a few of the nearest early-type spiral galaxies. The nuclei of line_6: spiral and S0 galaxies are likely to prove as interesting as those of the line_7: elliptical sample (e.g., the M51 nucleus with its X-shaped dust lanes). We line_8: propose a SNAPSHOT PC imaging survey of a subset (~100) of a nearby redshift- line_9: and magnitude-limited sample of 200 disk galaxies (spiral plus E/S0) to line_10: characterize the nuclei of galaxies over a broad range of Hubble types and line_11: luminosities (to L_star-2 mag), within a variety of environments (field, Virgo line_12: and Fornax). These data will provide invaluable statistics on the presence of line_13: nuclear cusps, stellar condensations, inner stellar disks and dust lanes in line_14: disk galaxies. The properties derived for nearby "normal" galactic nuclei line_15: will also provide a reference set for studies of rarer objects, such as AGNs. line_16: Furthermore, the archival database of such observations will be a resource for line_17: more detailed studies of galactic nuclei in later HST cycles. Such nuclei have NOT been line_3: the subject of an extensive survey with HST. The observations to date have line_4: largely concentrated on the nearest galaxies. The ability of HST to resolve line_5: structures FAR smaller than what can be done from the ground has been line_6: demonstrated during Cycles 1-3, and makes this program uniquely suited to the line_7: high resolution imaging capabilities of HST. The short exposures will be used line_8: to establish the surface brightness profile of the nucleus and to identify line_9: unusual nuclear condensations (e.g., star forming clumps), nuclear point line_10: sources, compact stellar or gaseous disks and bars, and dust lanes on line_11: subarcsecond scales. THE LIKELIHOOD OF SERENDIPITIOUS DISCOVERIES IN THESE line_12: GALACTIC NUCLEI IS HIGH. The objects chosen for observation by the scheduling line_13: group can be selected at random from the sample list. The sample of ~200 line_14: galaxies has been selected from the Revised Shapley-Ames catalog, with input line_15: from the Third Reference Catalog, with the following constraints: spiral or line_16: S0 galaxy, of RC2/RC3 type -3 to +7 (i.e., early S0 to Sd); brighter than line_17: L_star-2 mag; velocity <1000 km/s; distribution of the selected subset will line_18: be a uniform fraction of the bivariate distribution over luminosity and line_19: Hubble type for S0, S and SB galaxies; list complemented by a fractional line_21: selection of E/S0-Sd galaxies in two higher density regions, namely in the line_22: Virgo and Fornax clusters, with such galaxies being about 30% of the total. To line_23: maximize the number of objects, and thus improve the statistical weight of the ! question: 3 section: 2 line_1: result (and also improve the chances of finding particularly interesting line_2: objects) we have designed the program to fit into small observing windows. WE line_3: REQUEST THAT THE OBSERVATIONS BE TAKEN IN GYRO MODE. Based on our experience line_4: with our first cycle 3 SNAPSHOT data, as well as the cycle 1-2 results from line_5: other programs on cores, we expect that the requested pair of 80 s line_6: integrations in F606W will provide data with suitable S/N with PC1 of WFPC 2 line_7: because of its greatly improved Strehl/sharpness. We have discussed the line_8: expected drift rates with Bely and Doxsey and have concluded that the typical line_9: elongation will be small (1-3 px) and can be handled using the deconvolution line_10: techniques that we have developed for cycles 1-3 (especially since we will line_11: have stars in the WF images that can be used to establish the total drift). line_12: We have also reviewed the pointing performance after slews, have carried out line_13: some Monte Carlo simulations, and have concluded that for only a small line_14: fraction of slews will the target nucleus fall off the PC CCD, and in half line_15: those cases it will fall onto the WF CCDs; so the number of lost targets is line_16: not expected to exceed 10-13%. This may be further reduced, if it is line_17: practical to do so, by selecting targets from our extensive list that are line_18: close to a recent attitude update. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: Given the striking results that have been seen for galaxy nuclei with the line_2: aberrated HST/WFPC1, the PC camera of WFPC2 should return truly remarkable line_3: data. The image quality will be hugely better than we can do from the ground. line_4: Adaptive optical systems are many years from use on ground-based telescopes line_5: and will never provide the overall quality of images that space telescopes line_6: such as HST can achieve. Ground-based images at 0.5 arcsec FWHM (a value line_7: never reached on most telescopes, and only rarely exceeded on some) with a line_8: comparable-sized telescope provide images with a Strehl ratio of ~1%, nearly line_9: two orders of magnitude worse than HST. As we have seen in a number of papers line_10: and press releases, and as our first cycle 3 SNAPSHOT results show, this line_11: difference in the PSF size has a dramatic effect. Very valuable scientific line_12: results have been obtained in going from the typical 1-2 arcsec seeing to line_13: occasional 0.3-0.5 arcsec seeing at a few ground-based sites -- yet we have a line_14: gain in resolution from the very best ground-based results to HST that is line_15: proportionally larger. HST remains uniquely able to carry out high spatial line_16: resolution imaging programs on the nuclei of galaxies. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: There are no special requirements -- exposures are to be taken in line_2: gyro mode to optimize use of small observing windows and to minimize line_3: overhead. ! question: 6 section: 1 line_1: None required. ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: The team members already have very considerable experience in working with line_2: WFPC data from HST. In addition to the Snapshot data that is now being line_3: obtained in cycle 3, the team members are all deeply involved in HST projects line_4: that have used the PC to study the nature of galactic nuclei. Thus, this line_5: survey will be a very natural extension of ongoing programs, and so the line_6: analysis techniques established in these other programs can be easily line_7: transferred to the cycle 4 Snapshot data. We have worked extensively with line_8: deconvolution and sampling techniques (primarily ``Lucy-Richardson'' and line_9: ``Lucy-Hook''), and expect to utilize that experience to remove any effects of line_10: drift that result from operating in gyro mode. The stars that will be found line_11: in most fields in the 3 WF CCDs can be used to define the drift and its line_12: orientation (or set upper limits), so that we can establish a PSF in each case line_13: (if more than one star is available we can use the effective "subpixel line_14: sampling" to define the drift more accurately). To ensure timely publication line_15: of the results of the program, broad areas of responsibility have been defined line_16: for the team members and the student (as summarised in the budget narrative). ! question: 8 section: 1 line_1: As noted in Question 3, we are requesting that this program be carried out line_2: using gyro mode. We can meet our scientific objectives by utilizing small line_3: observing windows, and in so doing, assist in meeting the goal of maximizing line_4: the efficiency of HST. Observations of the nuclei of galaxies are likely to line_5: lead to some fascinating serendipitious discoveries and so the scientific line_6: returns from using suborbital windows are of benefit to the HST program as line_7: well as meeting our scientific goals. While a small fraction of our targets line_8: will probably be lost due to pointing errors following the slew to our target, line_9: this loss is a small price to pay from utilizing otherwise unused observing line_10: windows and hence obtaining a large number of observations. The number lost line_11: may also be reduced by selecting targets close to a recent attitude update. line_12: We request that this be done, but only if it is practical to do so. It is line_13: clearly better to do a large sample and lose a small fraction than impose any line_14: constraints that significantly limit the sample size. ! question: 9 section: 1 line_1: The PI and Co-Is are involved in other HST projects. Some data has been line_2: acquired from Cycle 1, but most are from Cycle 2, with the very first cycle 3 line_3: data being recently received.
