Of particular interest to us here is the line_6: study of abundance variations, specifically abundance gradients, in the line_7: gas in the galactic disk and low halo. We propose to obtain GHRS high line_8: resolution (3.5 km/s) Ech-B observations of absorption line profiles line_9: of several elements arising from two distinct nucleosynthetic origins. line_10: We will use 4 sightlines in the general direction of the galactic line_11: center, each sampling relatively low density intercloud gas where the line_12: degree of depletion of heavy elements onto dust is relatively low. line_13: These sight lines, which sample both sides of the galactic center, line_14: take maximum advantage of the velocity lever-arm provided by galactic line_15: rotation. By allowing us to relate absorption as a function of LSR line_16: velocity to galactocentric radius, we will be able to produce line_17: abundance gradient data down to galactocentric radii as small as line_18: 3.5 kpc. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: CARDELLI fname: JASON title: PI mi: A. inst: UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN country: USA ! lname: MASSA fname: DERCK inst: APPLIED RESEARCH CORPORATION country: USA esa: N ! lname: MEYER fname: DAVID mi: M. inst: NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY country: USA esa: N ! lname: SEMBACH fname: KENNETH mi: R. inst: MIT country: USA esa: N ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: We propose to observed 4 stars at two three principal wavelengths, line_2: 1808, 2062, and 2374 A using grating ECH-B. All observations will be line_3: made using the LSA, to take advantage of the maximum throughput, and a line_4: sampling strategy of two substeps per diode. The slight (20%) reduction line_5: in resolution in the post-COSTAR LSA relative to the SSA will not impact line_6: our analysis. The requested observations will allow us to obtain S/N = line_7: 30 (per substep) data for Si II 1808.0, Zn II 2062.7, Cr II 2062.2, line_8: 2066.2, and Fe II l2374.5. [As an added bonus, the single-setup line_9: coverage afforded by Ech-B will allow us to also obtain data for the line_10: stronger Fe II line at 2382.8 free-of-charge. This stronger line will line_11: be useful in assessing very weak low column density absorption.] We line_12: shall also employ the FP-SPLIT=4 procedure inorder to assess and remove line_13: potentially problematic fixed pattern noise features. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: CARDELLI fname: JASON mi: A. category: PI inst: University of Wisconsin addr_1: DEPARTMENT OF ASTRONOMY addr_2: 475 N.
