The AGN paradigm line_3: proposes that AGNs are powered by the accretion of matter onto line_4: supermassive black holes. Ground-based observations have discovered line_5: evidence of supermassive black holes in nearby quiescent galaxies by line_6: analyzing the stellar kinematics and nuclear structure. line_7: However, similar observations for galaxies hosting AGNs have not been line_8: possible because Earth's atmosphere prevents the detection of stellar line_9: light within 1" of a luminous AGN. With the improved imaging performance line_10: available to Cycle 4 HST observations, 80% of the light from an AGN line_11: is contained within a circle with radius=0.1 arcsec, thus providing for line_12: the detection of stellar light close to the nucleus. The advantage of line_13: detecting supermassive black holes in Seyfert galaxies instead of line_14: quiescent galaxies is that there is no need to rely on the statistics line_15: of AGNs and galaxies to place constraints on the AGN paradigm. The mass line_16: determined for the central engine by this technique for a Seyfert galaxy line_17: could be compared directly to the mass implied by the kinematics of the line_18: BLR gas, testing the hypothesis that it is in Keplerian motion. We line_19: propose to observe two Seyfert galaxies with HST, M81 and NGC 4151, line_20: since the black hole masses suggested from other studies can be detected. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: BOWER fname: GARY mi: A. inst: 3470 country: USA ! lname: WILSON fname: ANDREW mi: S. inst: 3470 country: USA ! lname: RICHSTONE fname: DOUGLAS mi: O. inst: 2660 country: USA ! lname: HECKMAN fname: TIMOTHY mi: M. inst: 2380 country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: Observations needed from HST include slit spectroscopy along the line_2: major and minor axes of each galaxy (using FOS with G400H for NGC 4151 line_3: and G570H for NGC 3031) and images of each galaxy with WFPC2 and the line_4: F547M filter. Spectra of one star are needed for calibration purposes. line_5: For the FOS exposures, we plan a four stage ACQ/PEAK sequence to line_6: acquire the nucleus. Positions away from the nucleus will be acquired line_7: by offset - then return to the nucleus. Given the large field of view of line_8: the PC, a blind acquisition will be sufficient for the WFPC2 exposures. line_9: FOS exposures include (a) 0.09 arcsec square aperture centered on line_10: the nucleus and at R = 0.15 arcsec on both sides of the nucleus along line_11: the major axis; (b) 0.21 arcsec square aperture centered at R = line_12: 0.30 arcsec on both sides of the nucleus along the major axis; (c) line_13: 0.21 arcsec square aperture centered at R = 0.21 arcsec on both sides line_14: of the nucleus along the minor axis; and (d) one template star line_15: spectrum for each grating-aperture combination used for galaxy line_16: exposures for a total of four template spectra. The WFPC2 exposures line_17: will be split to discriminate against particle events. ! question: 3 section: 2 line_1: All target positions for the FOS/RD exposures on the galaxies line_2: are within 0.30 arcsec of the nucleus. All FOS exposures for a given line_3: galaxy should be obtained with a single guide star acquisitions, line_4: although guide star reacquisitions are certainly necessary. line_5: NOTE: We would wish that the apertures not overlap, but this requires line_6: using the special requirement ORIENT. We do not fully understand the line_7: impact that ORIENT would have on our program in regards to scheduling. line_8: Consequently, we have left the orientation unconstrained because some line_9: overlap of the apertures is tolerable for our scientific objectives. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: Extensive efforts have been invested into searching for BHs line_2: in the nuclei of galaxies using ground-based and space-based line_3: observations (see references in section 2). Uncertainties in previous line_4: work include the limited spatial resolution of ground-based observations line_5: and the assumption that gravity dominates the kinematics of the BLR. line_6: Given these limitations, many investigators in this field have anticipated line_7: high-resolution observations with HST. The discussion in section 2 line_8: demonstrates that BHs with the masses inferred by previous studies of line_9: M81 and NGC 4151 are detectable with HST. Even with aberrated optics, line_10: HST has provided clues that BHs may exist in the nuclei of several line_11: galaxies. With the servicing mission, now is the time to use HST line_12: for this project. Initial evidence for a BH in M81 was presented by line_13: Keel (1989); the stellar velocity dispersion along the minor axis rises line_14: from 130 km/s at a radius of 8" to 170 km/s at the nucleus. This line_15: velocity dispersion profile is consistent with a scaled dynamical model line_16: of M31 containing a BH with mass 2 x 10^7 solar masses. Although line_17: differences between M81 and M31 make the determined mass uncertain, line_18: the observations were obtained during conditions of 0.6" seeing. line_19: Substantial improvement in the determination of the central mass requires line_20: observations with HST. Analyzing the stellar kinematics of NGC 4151 line_21: would provide a test of the "reverberation mapping" assumption that line_22: the BLR gas is in Keplerian motion. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: ! question: 6 section: 1 line_1: High S/N template spectra are required from HST because the ability line_2: to apply Fourier techniques requires that the only difference between line_3: the galaxy and template spectra be the radial velocity, velocity dispersion, line_4: and line strength. Obtaining template spectra with a different line_5: spectrograph than the galaxy spectra would introduce too much line_6: uncertainty due to slight differences between the instrumental line_7: profiles. Observations of template stars are as crucial to this project line_8: as any other instrumental calibration. ! ! question: 8 section: 1 line_1: We will obtain ground-based observations using the Michigan Dartmouth line_2: MIT (MDM) 2.4 m and long-slit spectrograph. Extensive efforts to line_3: improve the optics of this telescope during 1990-91 have resulted in line_4: sub-arcsec stellar images. One of us (DOR) has guaranteed access to line_5: this telescope. Complimentary ground-based spectra are needed to provide line_6: the stellar kinematics with resolution of 1" to properly constrain line_7: the dynamical models. An appropriate analysis of this type along the line_8: major axis of M81 has never been published. Ground-based observations of line_9: NGC 4151 can be obtained using a central obstruction bar to block most of line_10: the light from the nonstellar nucleus. ! question: 9 section: 1 line_1: No. 2493 "Narrow-Band Imaging of Markarian 78", A.
