Exposure line_3: times will range from 30s (to avoid saturation) to 60 minutes (broken line_4: up as needed to fit into orbits of course). The F336W ("U"; 40m) and line_5: F439W ("B"; 60m) filters will be used in order to obtain 3 color line_6: photometry of NGC 7252. CR-SPLIT will be used for all exposures longer line_7: than 10m. The galaxy will always be centered in the PC. line_9: Here is a quick summary: line_11: F336W F439W F555W F814W line_13: NGC 7252 2400 120 60 60 line_14: 3600 3600 2400 line_16: NGC 3921 1200 30 30 line_17: 2400 1800 line_19: NGC 3610 30 30 line_20: 1200 1000 line_22: NGC 1700 60 60 line_23: 1600 1200 ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: Briefly, the high-resolution imaging will provide the ability to: 1) line_2: determine isophotal diameters of the clusters; 2) distinguish line_3: candidate globular clusters (diam < 50 pc) from old OB associations line_4: (>200-500 pc); 3) map dust lanes that might interfere with the line_5: photometry; and 4) search for double nuclei. line_7: One of our key requirements is to determine the luminosity function line_8: for the clusters in NGC 7252 to a level which is 3.5 magnitudes line_9: fainter than our cycle 2 observations. While the throughput of the line_10: WFPC2 is about a factor of 2 worse than the PC for F555W and F785LP, line_11: the amount of light within a resolution element of 0.1 arcsec goes up line_12: by a factor of 10, due to the improved PSF. This means that the line_13: overall gain with WFPC2 will be about a factor of 5, or 1.7 line_14: magnitudes. The exposure time for our cycle 2 observations was only line_15: 1400 s. Our proposed exposure time for cycle 4 is 7200 s, hence line_16: providing another 1.8 magnitude improvement, for a total of 3.5 line_17: magnitudes. line_19: A detection threshold of V= I= 25 mag, scaled from our cycle 2 line_20: observations as described above, was used to determine the exposure line_21: times (15 - 40 minutes) for the other galaxies. We note that even line_22: with these relatively modest exposure times our detection threshold line_23: will be 2 magnitudes fainter than was possible in cycle 2. ! question: 8 section: 1 line_1: An earlier version of this proposal was awarded supplemental time in line_2: cycle 3 (NGC 3610 only). However, it is very unlikely that this line_3: will be observed. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: WHITMORE fname: BRAD mi: C. category: PI inst: STScI addr_1: 3700 SAN MARTIN DR. city: BALTIMORE state: MD zip: 21218 country: USA phone: 410-338-4743 ! ! end of general_form_address records fixed_targets: targnum: 1 name_1: NGC7252 descr_1: E, descr_2: 303, 320 pos_1: RA = 22H 20M 44.85S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC = -24D 40' 42.03" +/- 1" equinox: 2000 pm_or_par: NO rv_or_z: V=4760 comment_1: FLUX IS TOTAL MAGNITUDE OF GALAXY fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=11 ! targnum: 2 name_1: NGC3921 descr_1: E, descr_2: 301, 320 pos_1: RA = 11H 51M 06.93S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC = +55D 4' 43" +/- 1", pos_3: PLATE-ID = 00LK equinox: 2000 pm_or_par: NO rv_or_z: V=5975 comment_1: FLUX IS TOTAL MAGNITUDE OF GALAXY fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=14 ! targnum: 3 name_1: NGC3610 descr_1: E, descr_2: 303, 320 pos_1: RA = 11H 18M 25.2S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC = +58D 47' 10" +/- 1" equinox: 2000 pm_or_par: NO rv_or_z: V=1765 comment_1: FLUX IS TOTAL MAGNITUDE OF GALAXY. comment_2: NOTE: TARGET IS IN THE CONTINUOUS comment_3: VIEWING ZONE. fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=13 ! targnum: 4 name_1: NGC1700 descr_1: E, descr_2: 303, 320 pos_1: RA = 04H 56M 56.3S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC = -04D 51' 55" +/- 1" equinox: 2000 pm_or_par: NO rv_or_z: V=3915 comment_1: FLUX IS TOTAL MAGNITUDE OF GALAXY fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=12 ! ! end of fixed targets !
