This wind in principle contains the velocity distribution line_5: of the local ISM, plus potentially some modification of the flow line_6: at the heliospheric interface and further modification by the solar line_7: gravity and radiation pressure near the Sun. Observations of the H line_8: Ly alpha emission line profile can reveal the temperature and velocity line_9: dispersion of the flow, allowing us to study the local ISM flow and line_10: modifications to the wind within the solar system. Recent observations line_11: of the He and H flows in the solar system suggest that the He velocity line_12: of 26 km/sec is that of the local ISM cloud, and the H velocity of 20 line_13: km/sec is due to modification of the H flow by charge exchange at the line_14: heliospheric interface. We propose here a study of the H flow by line_15: measuring the velocity distribution of the local H flow through high line_16: resolution spectra of the H Ly alpha emission line profile along 3 line_17: lines of sight in the inner solar system. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: CLARKE fname: JOHN title: PI mi: T. inst: 2660 country: USA ! lname: PARESCE fname: FRANCESCO inst: 3470 country: USA esa: Y ! lname: FAHR fname: HANS inst: 5576 country: FRG esa: Y ! lname: BERTAUX fname: JEAN-LOUP inst: 5476 country: FRANCE esa: Y ! lname: LALLEMENT fname: ROSINE inst: 5476 country: FRANCE esa: Y ! lname: QUEMERAIS fname: ERIC inst: 5476 country: FRANCE esa: Y ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: We propose to observe along 3 lines of sight: upwind and downwind at the line_2: time of year when the Earth orbit is moving upwind, and across the flow line_3: when the Earth is moving perpendicular to the flow. The 3 lines of line_4: sight are designed to obtain information about the velocity distribution line_5: of the H flow near the Sun. The upwind/downwind observations sample line_6: regions of the flow just before and after the Sun, where the maximum line_7: effects of solar gravity and radiation pressure occur. A large velocity line_8: dispersion in the flow (as expected from a strong heliospheric charge line_9: exchange) should lead to a "filling in" of high velocity atoms in the line_10: downwind direction, observed as a broader line downwind than upwind. line_11: The cross-flow line of sight is designed to give the velocity dispersion line_12: perpendicular to the flow vector for comparison with the upwind and line_13: downwind measurements of the velocity dispersion along the flow direction. line_14: These observations require pointing only within roughly 5-10 degrees of line_15: each direction on the sky, with no bright stars in the aperture. The line_16: observations must be performed in dark time, due to geocoronal Ly alpha line_17: sky background emission. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: The flow of the ISW within the solar system can be studied either by line_2: directly sampling the atoms (accomplished to date only for the He flow by line_3: Ulysses spacecraft), or indirectly by remote sensing of the atoms resonant line_4: scattering solar emissions. The latter technique works only for radiative line_5: transitions arising from the ground state in which the atoms reside, so line_6: the Balmer series lines are produced only by fluorescence. By a large line_7: factor, the brightest emission of H atoms is the H Ly alpha line, and it is line_8: the only line of sufficient brightness for a line profile to be measured line_9: and the velocity structure of the flow obtained. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: The only special scheduling requests are the dark time requirement and line_2: the times of year descibed above and specified below. ! question: 6 section: 1 line_1: We will use standard calibration data for the GHRS, as already applied to line_2: our cycle 1 GRHS Echelle A spectra of Mars and sky background near Mars. ! ! question: 8 section: 1 line_1: None. ! question: 9 section: 1 line_1: There have been a total of 16 HST programs among the team in cycles line_2: 1-3.
