Such data are applicable line_6: to basic questions such as the development of disks and bulges, and the role line_7: mergers and interactions, and other environmental influences on the evolution line_8: of structure and stellar populations. line_10: Both teams made Cycle 1 and 2 observations that are described here. However, line_11: the combination of the SA problem and reduced time allocations severely line_12: limited the scope of both programs; thus, we request consideration under the line_13: Precedents Policy for originally approved Cycle 1 programs. line_15: We use our earlier results to demonstrate the feasibility of our program, line_16: pointing out the interesting but ambiguous nature of what has been learned line_17: to this point. In order to better understand the processes at work and line_18: and their range, we propose a more extensive program which includes a wider line_19: representation of cluster environments, adds color information, and reaches line_20: to higher redshifts. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: DRESSLER fname: ALAN inst: 3030 country: USA ! lname: BUTCHER fname: HARVEY inst: 6880 country: NETHERLANDS esa: Y ! lname: COUCH fname: WARRICK inst: 4145 country: AUSTRALIA ! lname: ELLIS fname: RICHARD inst: 8014 country: UK esa: Y ! lname: OEMLER fname: AUGUSTUS, JR. inst: 3900 country: USA ! lname: SHARPLES fname: RAY inst: 8018 country: UK esa: Y ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: We will observe 8 fields in rich clusters of galaxies covering the line_2: redshift range 0.37 < z < 0.55. These fields contain a range of line_3: environments and properties. We will image these fields with line_4: WFC-2 multiple-orbit exposures that will later be coadded to line_5: achieve sufficient signal-to-noise ratio for morphological line_6: classification. Field centers and boundaries are chosen with line_7: to ground-based spectroscopic and photometric studies of galaxies line_8: over the entire field. line_9: HST-WFC-2 observations will be 4-7 coadded single-orbit exposures of line_10: of 2000-2200 s, in a broad-band color roughly corresponding line_11: to rest-frame V, and, for some fields, additional exposures in a line_12: band corresponding to rest-frame U. The range in exposure time will line_13: (partially) compensate for the degradation in signal-to-noise ratio line_14: due to increasing redshift. Color maps will be constructed to study line_15: the distribution of star formation. Morphological classifications line_16: will be done primarily from the rest-frame V images (this corresponds line_17: closely with the traditional bandpass used for low-redshift galaxy line_18: classifications) but we will attempt adding both bands to see if the line_19: increased signal-to-noise and bluer color aids in the determination of line_20: galaxy type. ! question: 3 section: 2 line_1: According to the convention for WFPC-2, coordinates as given in the line_2: FIXED TARGETS positions are shifted by POS TARG +10,+10 to bring the line_3: center to the apex of the pyramid. Exposures for a given field and line_4: a given color are split into two groups with a shift introduced of line_5: +2,+2 arcseconds, in order to displace objects situated on CCD defects line_6: or on the seams of the pyramid. Thus, POS TARG +12,+12 corresponds to line_7: the second group. CR-SPLIT=NO for all observations with more than line_8: 5 orbits, since in those cases there are sufficient multiple exposures line_9: to perform cosmic ray rejection. line_11: Orient angles are generally not critical, but some attempt has been line_12: made to maximize the number of "active" galaxies covered by the WFPC-2 line_13: field, and to take some advantage of the PC chip, and to minimize the line_14: disadvantage of its smaller field. The most important factor is line_15: to keep the ORIENT ANGLE the *SAME* for all observations of a target, line_16: so that the same objects are sampled in all exposures and to simplify line_17: coadding of the images. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: Typical morphological classifications for galaxies at low redshift have line_2: better than 1 kiloparsec resolution. In his study of 55 rich cluster, line_3: Dressler (1980 ApJS 42) was able to achieve reliable classifications for line_4: approximately 6000 galaxies in rich clusters, out to a redshift of z = 0.05, line_5: at which point the resolution with 1.0 arcsecond seeing was slightly better line_6: than a kiloparsec. The best ground-based imaging for faint objects, line_7: R > 19, has achieved 0.4 arcseconds FWHM with image stabilization, but line_8: this amounts to approximately 3 kpc at z = 0.5, too crude for reliable line_9: classification. The HST is the only instrument that can provide line_10: the ~= 0.1 arcsecond FWHM imaging that can achieve sub-kiloparsec line_11: resolution for galaxies at z = 0.5 to allow comparable morphological line_12: classifications to low-redshift galaxies. The Wide-Field Camera, by line_13: virtue of its comparatively large field, makes feasible a study of line_14: clusters of galaxies which contain many galaxies, allowing statistical line_15: samples to be assembled. ! question: 4 section: 2 line_1: The time requested reflects the need for a substantial number of fields line_2: (8) and the need for long exposures to achieve sufficient signal-to- line_3: noise ratios for morphological classification. The case for 8 different line_4: fields is justified by the need to sample a range of cluster types and line_5: environments, as explained in Section 2. line_7: Exposures of between 140 to 245 minutes are necessary to accumulate line_8: sufficient signal-to-noise ratios for accurate morphological line_9: classification of galaxies in clusters at 0.35 < z < 0.55. These line_10: correspond to 4-7 orbit (typically 2100 s per orbit) exposures, depending on line_11: the redshift. The range of 4 to 7 orbits line_12: reflects an attempt to partially compensate for the decrease in line_13: signal-to-noise ratio with increasing redshift, again based on line_14: simulations. In summary, then, the Cycle 1 and 2 observations confirmed line_15: our original estimates of 4-6 orbit exposures for WFC-1, slightly line_16: augmented to account for the loss of efficiency in WFC-2. line_17: The above calculations refer to our F702W and F814W exposures. We are line_18: also imaging some of the cluster fields in F555W as well, to acquire color line_19: information. Because of the lower efficiency in F555W and the generally line_20: lower fluxes in the ultraviolet for cluster galaxies, we expect that line_21: these exposures will go much less deep in an equivalent time. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: To allow for timely data reduction & analysis, we request the following: line_2: Do all exposures PER TARGET in this program within 7 days. ( This limit line_3: may be relaxed if necessary so long as the essential goal of having all line_4: exposures of the science target, made at the SAME ORIENT, is met, and line_5: that the preferable ORIENT angle is used. We chose these angles pretty line_6: carefully to minimize the effect of the smaller PC FOV.) The maintenance line_7: of the same ORIENT is important for field coverage and frame coadding. line_8: Exposures of 2000-2200 s are made in two groups, one or, in some cases, line_9: two colors. For the first group the Fixed Target List coordinates are line_10: placed at the apex of the WFPC-2 pyramid by POS TARG +10,+10. For line_11: a second group POS TARG +12,+12 moves all objects +2,+2 arcseconds, line_12: so that objects are displaced from CCD defects and objects formerly on line_13: the seams of the pyramid are revealed. line_14: line_15: CR-SPLIT=NO is used when six or more orbits are taken, since this line_16: provides sufficient frames for cosmic ray rejection, but CR-SPLIT=0.5 line_17: is used when 5 or fewer frames are taken, along with CR-TOLERANCE=0.0 line_18: in order to keep the exposure times split evenly to facilitate the line_19: removal of cosmic rays, etc. line_20: line_21: Please contact the PI as soon as possible if any of the links in this line_22: program have been or are to be broken for purposes of implementation line_23: and/or scheduling, in case he has any alternative preferences, etc. ! question: 6 section: 1 line_1: ! ! question: 8 section: 1 line_1: ! question: 9 section: 1 line_1: No. 2373/3857/4719 "Morphology of Galaxies in Clusters at z = 0.5" line_2: Cycles 1 and 2; GO; Dressler, Butcher, Gunn, and Oemler line_3: No. 2600 "Cores of Early-Type Galaxies" line_4: Cycles 1 and 2; GO; Faber, Kormendy, Richstone, Tremaine, Lauer, and Dressler line_5: No. 2269 "Galaxy Populations in Intermediate Redshift Clusters line_6: Cycle 1; GO; Couch, Ellis, and Sharples line_7: No. 4072 "Star Formation Rates in Distant Cluster Galaxies" line_8: Cycle 2; GTO; Ellis, Couch, Sharples, and MacCay line_9: No. 4298 "Galaxy Populations in Intermediate Redshift Clusters" line_10: Cycle 3; GO; Couch, Ellis, Sharples, and Smail ! question: 9 section: 2 line_1: Observations from 2373/3857/4719 and N2269 are the only relevant line_2: proposals with data (no data for 4072 and 4298 as of this writing). line_3: The results of these two programs are covered in Section 2 of this proposal. line_4: ``The Spectra and Morphology of Galaxies in High-Redshift Clusters'', line_5: Dressler, A., in ``Observational Cosmology'', eds.
