In line_3: particular, damped Ly-alpha absorbers have been found at high redshifts line_4: which are assumed to be protogalactic disks. Our goal is to identify line_5: this population of absorbers by investigating the nature of 21cm/damped line_6: Ly-alpha systems at intermediate z (0.3 to 1). We propose to perform a line_7: detailed imaging and spectroscopic study of four 21cm absorbers and three line_8: damped Ly-alpha absorber candidates, for which we have acquired subarcsec line_9: seeing deep images at CFHT. In six cases, there is an object blended line_10: with the quasar image with impact parameters in the range 0.6 to < 3". line_11: HST high spatial resolution will give the position, extent, inclination line_12: and morphologigal type of the intervening galaxy, and thus the location line_13: of the region of the disk/halo probed by the background optical and line_14: radio quasar sources. Observations of the damped Ly-alpha absorptions in line_15: the quasar spectra will give the HI column densities, which combined line_16: with the radio data will allow to derive the HI cloud temperatures and line_17: in the cases of extended radio sources the strength of their magnetic line_18: fields. The metal absorption lines (CII, CIV and in the optical MgII, line_19: MnII, FeII) will be used to relate the properties (ionization level, line_20: abundances) of intermediate and high redshift damped Ly-alpha absorbers. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: BERGERON fname: JACQUELINE inst: 5436 country: FRANCE esa: Y ! lname: BOISSE fname: PATRICK inst: 5424 country: FRANCE esa: Y ! lname: DEHARVENG fname: JEAN-MICHEL inst: 5446 country: FRANCE esa: Y ! lname: LE BRUN fname: VINCENT inst: 5436 country: FRANCE esa: Y ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: The observing plan combines deep WFPC2 imagery of each quasar field line_2: and FOS spectroscopy of the quasars. The imagery aims at studying the line_3: characteristics (position, extent, magnitude, color, morphology and line_4: inclination) of the galaxy responsible for the absorption in the quasar line_5: spectra (in one case the absorber has yet to be discovered). The line_6: spectroscopy aims at determining the Ly-alpha absorption strengths and line_7: profiles as well as detecting metal absorption lines from the same line_8: systems. The spectroscopic observations will concern 5 of the 7 targets line_9: since the information is already available from optical data for the line_10: high z 21cm/damped Ly-alpha absorber and is planned in a GTO program line_11: for another target (we will retrieve these data from the data bank). line_12: Imagery: for each target, an exposure as long as 3600 s with the line_13: F702W (wide R) filter is needed to obtain the desired morphological line_14: information (a S/N of about 7 per PC pixel is reached for a typical line_15: galaxy surface brightness m(R)=22/square arcsec). These long exposures line_16: are not duplicates of much shorter exposures which are listed for line_17: 3 of our targets in the GTO/cycle4 catalog. In about 2000 s exposure line_18: with the less efficient F450W (wide B) filter, we will obtain color line_19: information and global properties of star formation activity for each line_20: absorber. Because of its high redshift, the absorber along the line line_21: of sight to MC1331+170 is a special case and will be better observed line_22: with the filters F702W and F814W. The exposure times have been line_23: changed accordingly. Most of the exposures have to be split into ! question: 3 section: 2 line_1: Imagery (cont'd): sub-exposures in order to reduce the blooming due to line_2: the light from the quasar (it will in addition serve for cosmic-ray line_3: removal). Given the B and V mag of the quasars, this strategy is a line_4: trade-off between the signal to noise penalty resulting from multiple line_5: read-out (non negligible contribution from the RON) and the desire to line_6: stay below 300000e (3 times blooming threshold) in the central pixel line_7: of the PC PSF (assuming worst case; Handbook Table 5.1). line_8: Spectroscopy: the choice of operating modes and exposure times are line_9: based on direct comparison with the quasar absorption line key program. line_10: Spectra with the G190H and G270H and SNRs of about 30 per resolution line_11: element are planned for the three brighter targets. Identical exposure line_12: times are chosen for the 2 quasars with associated 21cm absorption line_13: (similar U and V mag) and sligthly shorter ones for the quasar with a line_14: predicted damped Ly-alpha absorption (0.5 mag brighter in U and similar line_15: UV flux than 1 of the above 2 targets). Spectra with the G160L and blue line_16: digicon and a SNR of 20 are needed for the 2 fainter quasars to explore line_17: the Lyman edge and the strongest lines of the Lyman series (observed line_18: equivalent widths larger than 3A). They will constrain the HI column line_19: density if the absorption systems are barely damped (for the 21cm line_20: absorber the background radio source is extended and the other absorber line_21: is a damped Ly-alpha candidate). The G160L exposures are identical line_22: (similar U and V mag after removal of strong emission lines). These line_23: observations are complementary to a G160L/red digicon GTO program. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: The HST provides imagery with unprecedented angular resolution to line_2: discover and separate the galaxy from the quasar and study its line_3: morphology. The targets have been tested to be beyond ground-based line_4: capabilities.
