Abstract This is a proposal to add a vital datum to an already considerable dataset describing the jet/beam - cloud interaction in the radio galaxy PKS 2152-69. The interception of a blazar (photon) beam by a small, gas-rich companion galaxy has produced a wealth of physical phenomena which we have studied from radio to X-ray wavelengths. The gas in the companion has become highly ionized (up to Fe9+) and the dust is scattering the photon beam. The full understanding of this phenomenon allows us to derive important properties of the photon beams and, possibly, particle jets which are a part of the radio-loud AGN phenomenon. We intend to use the WFPC2 with two ultraviolet filters to image the cloud in strong emission line free regions around 3000A and 1600A to determine the ultraviolet continuum energy distribution which is already known at long UV wavelengths from IUE. In the longer of the filters, we will measure the linear polarization in order to determine its wavelength dependence in conjunction with our existing B-band measurement. The diagnosis of the scattering mechanism is important for the understanding of the 'alignment effect' in high redshift radio galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of proposed observations. The observation consists of two parts: Linear polarization measurements with F300W + POLQ and pure imaging with F160BW. All observations are to be taken with WFC using 2x2 on-chip binning. Each filter (polarization angle) consists of two ~1200S exposures (each with CR-SPLIT) with a relative shift of 1 (unbinned) pixel (0.1") in both X and Y between the two parts. All the polarization observations should be done with the SAME (arbitrary) orientation. The F160BW pair (which have slightly longer exposures) should also be done with the same orientation although this NEED not be the same as F300W/POLQ. If there is no scheduling problem, it would help analysis to have the same orientation for ALL the exposures. NB. Following the circular by M Clampin about the Wood's filter, we have changed the UV filter from 160BW to F218W. This produces an estimated red-leak of less than 1% for our source and is essentially free of emission line contamination. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. We have obtained an extensive set of observations of the radio galaxy and of the HIC using ground- based optical and radio telescopes, IUE and Rosat (Tadhunter et al., 1987 and 1988, di Serego Alighieri et al., 1988, Fosbury et al., 1990, Fosbury et al. in prep, see section 2). In particular we have imaged the HIC in the continuum down to the atmospheric limit at 3250 A and in the H alpha and [OIII]5007 emission lines. We have obtained the UV spectral energy distribution of the cloud down to about 2500 A and its total Lyman alpha flux with IUE. We have measured the polarization of the continuum source in the cloud by pushing near its limits one of the most efficient imaging polarizers available (EFOSC at the 3.6m ESO telescope). We have done this in the B band, the only wavelength where it is possible from the ground since the cloud becomes rapidly fainter in the red and EFOSC is not efficient below 4000 A. Therefore we need the UV sensitivity of the HST both to extend the study of the spectral energy distribution to shorter wavelengths and to measure the dependence of the polarization on the wavelength. We also need the high angular resolution of the HST to study the spatial distribution of the continuum source. We have obtained high resolution radio maps at 3.5 and 6.3 cm with the Australia Telescope, which show a radio counterpart of the cloud, and demonstrate that the inner radio jet does indeed point exactly to the cloud. The Rosat HRI image shows a 5-sigma source coincident with the cloud and at the same flux level relative to the X-ray nucleus as seen at radio frequencies. Unpublished VLBI data (SHEVE experiment, Meier, Reynolds, private communication) show a nuclear radio source elongated towards the HIC. From all of these data we have precise astrometry relative to an accurate, very high precision VLBI nucleus. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. With a declination of (J2000) -69D 41', the source may be available in the CVZ. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. The UV passband filters we use are in the list of recommended filters by Mark Clampin. We assume that the POLQ throughput will be calibrated. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8.
