These observations will test the predictions of the line_5: geometrical model of pulsed radiation from the Crab Pulsar. According line_6: to the model, the optical and radio emission from the pulsar originate line_7: in different regions of the pulsar magnetosphere. The optical emission line_8: is part of a continuum which extends without a break from infrared to line_9: gamma-rays. The pulse profile and polarisation should be similar over line_10: this entire wavelength range because they are determined entirely by line_11: the geometry of the emitting region. These observations offer the only line_12: known method of determining the geometry of the emitting region. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: GRAHAM-SMITH fname: FRANCIS title: PI inst: NUFFIELD RADIO ASTRONOMY LABORATORIES country: U.K. esa: Y ! lname: LYNE fname: ANDREW mi: G. inst: NUFFIELD RADIO ASTRONOMY LABORATORIES country: U.K. esa: Y ! lname: SHEMAR fname: S. mi: L. inst: NUFFIELD RADIO ASTRONOMY LABORATORIES country: U.K. esa: Y ! lname: BIGGS fname: JAMES mi: D. inst: UNIVERSITIES SPACE RESEARCH ASSOCIATION country: USA ! lname: DOLAN fname: JOSEPH mi: F. inst: NASA/GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 2 section: 1 line_1: ! question: 3 section: 1 line_1: The polarisation of the Crab pulsar will be observed as a function of line_2: pulse phase in the F277M filter with a time resolution of 270 microsec. The line_3: data will be co-added on the ground modulo the pulsar period as determined line_4: simultaneously by radio observations from Jodrell Bank to obtain a line_5: polarimetric light curve with approximately 1 msec temporal resolution. The line_6: pulsar light curve will be observed in each orientation of the analyzer for 15 line_7: minutes at a time. To complete the previously obtained partial observation line_8: set, a 1 hour observation of the Crab pulsar will be made, 15 minutes in each line_9: orientation analyzer. This will bring the exposure time in each orientation line_10: analyzer to the same value. The background will be observed at two positions, line_11: one 2" N and one 2" S of the pulsar, for 1 hour at each location. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: UV observations, available only from HST, will effectively double the line_2: frequency range over which the sweep of polarisation across the pulse of the line_3: Crab pulsar will have been observed. Observations in the UV are needed to line_4: verify the theoretical prediction of the geometric model of pulsar emission line_5: that the sweep in position angle and associated variation in amount of line_6: polarisation will be the same in the UV as in the visual. Any differences line_7: between the polarization in the UV and that at the visual and radio line_8: frequencies will indicate how the physics of pulsar magnetospheric emission line_9: models needs to be refined. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: ! question: 6 section: 1 line_1: ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: The data will be folded into approximately 1 msec bins modulo the period line_2: of the pulsar as determined simultaneously from radio observations at Jodrell line_3: Bank. In the phase regions of the main pulse and interpulse, the intensity line_4: may be large enough to allow us to box the data in 0.5 msec bins; in the low line_5: intensity phase region between the interpulse and the main pulse, the data will line_6: be binned in 5 msec boxes. The constant nebular background will be subtracted line_7: before analysis. Standard polarimetric data reduction procedures will be line_8: applied to derive the variation of polarisation and position angle as a line_9: function of pulse phase, using computer facilities and programs developed by line_10: the HSP Team at the Goddard Space Flight Center. ! question: 8 section: 1 line_1: ! question: 9 section: 1 line_1: Previous HST Time: line_2: GTO 1101 "Optical and UV Observations of Radio Pulsars" line_3: Establishes the Crab pulsar photometric light curve in the UV. line_4: GO 3557 "Polarimetric Observations of the Crab Pulsar in the UV" line_5: Partial observation of the program contained in this proposal. ! question: 9 section: 2 line_1: "The Crab Pulsar in the Visible and UV with 20 Microsecond Effective Time line_2: Resolution", J.
