Although models for WR stars line_5: are not well enough developed to infer the basic parameters line_6: of the 3 WR stars in R136a, models for O stars are well line_7: well established, and they suggest that the O stars line_8: in R136a are relatively normal, having initial masses no line_9: higher than 60 Msun (Heap et al. 1992, Malumuth & Heap 1992, line_10: di Marchi et al. 1993); there are no unusual "super-massive" line_11: stars in R136a. With HST/GHRS/CoSTAR, it will be possible line_12: to obtain spectra of an O star in R136a without contam- line_13: ination by WR stars. These spectra will be able to confirm line_14: or invalidate the photometric results. Thus, these spectra line_15: will have implications both for the population of R136a line_16: and for the validity of stellar population studies of line_17: giant extragalactic HII regions and starbursts that are line_18: based entirely on photometry. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: ! lname: HEAP fname: SARA mi: R. inst: NASA, GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER country: USA lname: GHRS-TEAM fname: WHAT_A_GREAT inst: NASA, GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: This program is similar to the first ERO program line_2: on Melnick 42: the target is similar (a hot, massive star line_3: in 30 Dor), it uses the same instrument (GHRS/Side1/G140L). line_4: In this case, there are two targets, R136a2 (presumably line_5: WN4.5) and R136a5 (presumably early O star). R136a5 is about line_6: 1 mag fainter than Mk 42, but the efficiency of the GHRS line_7: should be twice as high as before COSTAR, so this program line_8: uses the same exposure time on R136a5 as it did on Mk 42. line_9: The exposure times are 4 times shorter on R136a2, since we line_10: only need to confirm the spectral type and basic spectral line_11: features. This program will also yield excellent pictures line_12: of the R136a field in both N1 and N2, thus confirming the line_13: benefits of COSTAR for imaging. line_14: The observing strategy is the following. We first aquire line_15: a spot between R136a1 and R136a2. If the two stars are of line_16: equal brightness, then the spot will be half-way between line_17: and a distance of 0.053" from R136a1. We next slew to R136a2 line_18: and get a spectrum. By assuming the spot is really R136a1, line_19: we may have overshot R136a2 by 0.053, but that's okay. line_20: We next slew to R136a5 & get a spectrum. Again we may over line_21: shoot a little. Finally we get some UV maps. question: 4 section: 1 line_1: The HST+CoSTAR/GHRS is needed to isolate individual stars line_2: in the very compact cluster, R136a. In this program, a line_3: spectrum of R136a5 will be obtained even though there is line_4: a brighter star, R136a2, less than 0.3" away! question: 5 section: 1 question: 6 section: 1 line_1: This program will undoubtedly be one of the first external line_2: observations with the GHRS using Side 1 since the summer of line_3: 1991. ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: The spectra will be reduced and analyzed at Goddard Space line_2: Flight Center. Modeling of the wind and estimation of the line_3: basic stellar parameters will be in collaboration with HST line_4: GTO's and GO's. general_form_address: lname: HEAP fname: SARA mi: R. category: PI inst: GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER addr_1: CODE 681 city: GREENBELT state: MD zip: 20771 country: USA phone: 301-286-9545 ! end of general_form_address records fixed_targets: targnum: 1 name_1: R136a1 descr_1: B,103,D,203 pos_1: RA = 05H 38M 42.438S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC = -69D 06' 02.294" +/- 0.5" equinox: 2000 pm_or_par: NO fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=12.77 fluxnum_2: 2 fluxval_2: B-V=+0.43 comment_1: V,B-V from Malumuth & Heap (1993) targnum: 2 name_1: R136a2 descr_1: B,103,D,203 pos_1: RA = 05H 38M 42.4576S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC = -69D 06' 02.242" +/- 0.5" equinox: 2000 pm_or_par: NO fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=13.38 fluxnum_2: 2 fluxval_2: B-V=+0.43 comment_1: WN star in R136a; coordinates and comment_2: V,B-V from Malumuth & Heap (1993) targnum: 5 name_1: R136a5 descr_1: B,105,D,203 pos_1: RA = 05H 38M 42.4785S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC = -69D 06' 02.096" +/- 0.5" equinox: 2000 pm_or_par: NO fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=13.73 fluxnum_2: 2 fluxval_2: B-V=+0.12 comment_1: O star in R136a; coordinates and comment_2: V,B-V from Malumuth & Heap (1993) ! end of fixed targets !
