At z > 1.7, Ly-alpha emission has been detected in line_3: powerful radio galaxies and recently in a few proto-galactic disks which line_4: give rise to damped Ly-alpha absorption in the spectra of background line_5: quasars. At low redshift, it has been detected in some starburst line_6: galaxies. However, not all the nearby starburst galaxies show Ly-alpha line_7: emission which may be due to either absorption by dust grains and/or line_8: the presence of an underlying B star population. line_9: At intermediate redshifts (z=0.5), objects giving rise to MgII absorption line_10: systems in quasar spectra have been identified with field galaxies of line_11: very extended gaseous envelopes. These galaxies show signs of stellar line_13: formation activity, revealed by their blue continuum and OII 3727 line_14: emission and which should also be traced by their Ly-alpha emission. line_15: We propose to observe the Ly-alpha emission of a few of these absorbing line_16: starburst galaxies with fairly strong OII 3727 (and H-beta) line_17: emission. This will help to ascertain their activity, to provide a link line_18: between the z=0.5 MgII absorbers and the z=2 proto-galactic disks, and line_19: to clarify the interpretation of Ly-alpha emission in high redshift line_20: galaxies. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: DEHARVENG fname: JEAN-MICHEL title: PI inst: LABORATOIRE ASTRONOMIE SPATIALE country: FRANCE esa: Y ! lname: BERGERON fname: JACQUELINE inst: INSTITUT D ASTROPHYSIQUE country: FRANCE esa: Y ! lname: BUAT fname: VERONIQUE inst: LABORATOIRE ASTRONOMIE SPATIALE country: FRANCE esa: Y ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: The observations will be obtained with the FOS, using the G190H line_2: grating and the red digicon except for the lowest redshift line_3: object 1127-145 (Ly-alpha is shifted only to 1596 A and the line_4: blue digicon should be better). line_5: The large entrance aperture 4.3"*4.3" (which is effectively line_6: 4.3"*1.4" given the heights of the diodes) will be used. line_7: The CIV lines will also be in the spectral range of the line_8: G190H grating giving, if detected, an indication on the line_9: excitation level in the objects. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: We aim at observing the Lyman-alpha emission (1216 A) line_2: from galaxies at moderate redshifts (0.3-0.5); the HST line_3: is the only facility providing access to the line_4: corresponding UV wavelength range with enough sensitivity. line_5: Because we plan to observe with the largest entrance line_6: aperture of the FOS, the program is not too much affected line_7: by the spherical aberration. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: From ground-based study we know that one of the target, the line_2: galaxy close to the line of sight to QSO 1127-145, is elongated. line_3: In order to maximize the flux received and to improve the line_4: accuracy of the comparison with the ground-based data, line_5: we ask to approximately align the X axis of the blue digicon line_6: with the major axis of this galaxy. ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: Data reduction and analysis will be based on the regular FOS line_2: data products and performed at the proposer institutes. line_3: The amount of expected data will be small and the main concern line_4: will be to get the most appropriate dark current files from line_5: the STScI User Support Branch. The data analysis and reduction line_6: will be done on a VAX station with either the IRAF and/or MIDAS line_7: softwares (LAS) and a SUN station with MIDAS (IAP). ! question: 9 section: 1 line_1: ! question: 10 section: 1 line_1: ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: DEHARVENG fname: JEAN-MICHEL category: PI inst: LABORATOIRE ASTRONOMIE SPATIALE addr_1: TRAVERSE DU SIPHON, LES TROIS LUCS city: BP8 - 13376 MARSEILLE CEDEX 12 country: FRANCE phone: (33)91055917 telex: 420584F ! ! end of general_form_address records fixed_targets: targnum: 3 name_1: PKS-1127-14 descr_1: E,314 pos_1: PLATE-ID=02MF, pos_2: RA = 11H 30M 7.018S +/- 0.3", pos_3: DEC = -14D 49' 27.7" +/- 0.3" equinox: J2000 rv_or_z: Z=1.187 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=16.9 +/-0.3 fluxnum_2: 2 fluxval_2: B-V=0.27 ! targnum: 4 name_1: PKS-1127-14-GAL descr_1: H,515 pos_1: XI-OFF = 8.9" +/- 0.2", pos_2: ETA-OFF = 3.7" +/- 0.2", pos_3: FROM 3 rv_or_z: Z=0.313 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=20.1 +/-0.3 ! ! end of fixed targets !
