We propose to search recent SNR's line_6: for any remnant star associated with them, and to line_7: study the photometric variability of known examples line_8: of neutron stars which are remnants of supernovae. line_9: The results will place important constraints on the line_10: mechanisms by which neutron stars originate. line_11: Revision History: Prepared for augmentation line_12: submission--Dolan 5/8/92; ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: BLESS fname: ROBERT mi: C. inst: WISCONSIN, UNIVERSITY OF country: USA ! lname: DOLAN fname: JOSEPH mi: F. inst: NASA, GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER country: USA ! lname: ELLIOT fname: JAMES mi: L. inst: MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY country: USA ! lname: ROBINSON fname: EDWARD mi: L. inst: TEXAS, UNIVERSITY OF country: USA ! lname: WHITE fname: RICHARD mi: L. inst: SPACE TELESCOPE SCIENCE INSTITUTE country: USA ! lname: VAN CITTERS fname: G. mi: W. inst: NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: Searches for remnant stars at the center of recent line_2: SNR's would be conducted by the HSP in conjunction line_3: with the WFC and possibly the FOS. A WFC deep image line_4: of the SNR in the UV would reveal any suitably line_5: placed central images. These images would then be line_6: observed serially by the HSP in a wide bandwidth line_7: filter and the data analyzed for pulsation by fast line_8: Fourier transform methods. Observations in 3 line_9: different UV filters would allow the star to be line_10: plotted on a color-color diagram. Candidates with a line_11: hot color temperature or pulsation could be line_12: confirmed by an FOS spectrum. A neutron star line_13: spectrum would be expected to be a blue, featureless line_14: continuum a la the Crab nebula pulsar, but SS433 has line_15: a spectrum dominated by emission lines with line_16: relativistic velocity offsets and wavelength line_17: variations apparent from day to day. Hence, any line_18: candidate with an unusual spectrum would merit line_19: further study. Cycle 0 (SV/GTO) Observations: 1H 4M ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: (1) remnant stars are known from presently available line_2: upper limits on most SNR central stars to be fainter line_3: than V = 20; searching for a fainter star requires line_4: the limiting magnitude available only on ST. (2) line_5: remnant stars are expected to have spectra which line_6: peak strongly in the UV. This wavelength region is line_7: available for faint objects only on ST. (3) one line_8: method of identifying remnant stars searches for line_9: their pulsational periods which are expected to be line_10: in the sub-second to second range. Freedom from line_11: noise induced by atmospheric scintillation makes the line_12: HSP the most efficient and sensitive instrument line_13: available to detect such periodicities. ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: Deep images of SNR's in the UV will be analyzed to line_2: determine whether any suitably placed central images line_3: exist. The HSP photometric observations of these line_4: candidates will be analyzed by power spectrum line_5: analysis methods to determine if any pulsation line_6: exists (as it does in the Crab Nebula and line_7: 1E2259+586). Three filter photometry will be line_8: analyzed to determine the color temperature of the line_9: candidate in a color-color diagram; candidate stars line_10: with a hot color temperature will be confirmed by an line_11: FOS spectrum. Neutron star spectra are expected to line_12: be blue, featureless continua, as in the Crab line_13: Nebula, but SS433 has a spectrum dominated by line_14: emission lines with relativistic velocity offsets line_15: and wavelength variations apparent from day to day. line_16: Any candidate with an unusual spectrum will be line_17: studied further photometrically. Wide bandwidth line_18: photometric observations will be analyzed by power line_19: spectrum analysis methods for pulsation in the line_20: source. Photometric observations will also be ! question: 12 section: 1 line_1: Searching for the remnant stars in supernova line_2: remnants is directly related to Scientific Objective line_3: 2 specified in the HSP CEI specifications, "searches line_4: for optical counterparts to radio pulsars".
