These line_3: observations are suggestive of satellites for those minor planets. If one line_4: minor planet satellite is found, then it is expected that many minor planets line_5: would have satellites, unless there is a feature in the process of formation line_6: and evolution of the minor planets which favors uniqueness. line_7: There are optical, radar and light curve observations indicative of binary line_8: asteroids. The negative reports have primarily been for larger asteroids, so line_9: it appears that searches should concentrate on average type asteroids. line_10: In addition to the significance of satellites of minor planets to the theory of line_11: the formation of the solar system, the discovery of satellites and the line_12: determination of their periods will permit the determination of the masses of line_13: the minor planets. This is the only way to determine accurate values for the line_14: masses and hence the densities and compositions. line_15: These observations will be used to search for direct images of satellites line_16: brighter than 22nd magnitude around several asteroids where unconfirmed line_17: observations of satellites have been reported. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: WESTPHAL fname: JAMES mi: A. inst: CALTECH country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: ! question: 3 section: 1 line_1: The observation of each asteroid should be made near the time when it is at line_2: opposition. The ST should track with the asteroid, so it and any possible line_3: satellites would be point images and the stars would be trailed. line_4: Three successive exposures should be taken of each asteroid. ! question: 13 section: 1 line_1: Since observations of occultations of stars by asteroids have suggested the line_2: existence of satellites of asteroids, a selected list of asteroids will be line_3: observed to search for direct images of satellites. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: WESTPHAL fname: JAMES mi: A. title: PROF. category: PI inst: CALTECH addr_1: M/S 170-25 addr_2: DIVISION OF GEOLOGICAL addr_3: & PLANETARY SCIENCES city: PASADENA state: CA zip: 91125 country: USA phone: 818-395-4900 ! lname: SEIDELMANN fname: P. mi: K. category: CON inst: US NAVAL OBSERVATORY addr_1: ORBITAL MECHANICS DEPARTMENT city: WASHINGTON state: DC zip: 20392 country: USA phone: (202) 653-1545 ! lname: DANIELSON fname: ED category: CON inst: CALTECH addr_1: M/S 170-25 addr_2: DIVISION OF GEOLOGICAL addr_3: & PLANETARY SCIENCES city: PASADENA state: CA zip: 91125 country: USA phone: 818-395-4900 ! lname: FABER fname: SANDRA mi: M. category: CON inst: UC SANTA CRUZ - LICK OBSERVATORY addr_1: NATURAL SCIENCE II city: SANTA CRUZ state: CA zip: 95064 country: USA phone: 408-459-2944 ! ! end of general_form_address records !
