Galaxies will be imaged with the F555W and F814W line_5: filters. Serveral objects known to contain ionized gas will also line_6: be imaged in narrow-band filters to obtain the gas distribution. line_7: In M31 and M32 a special series of ultra-violet exposures will line_8: be taken to study the hot stellar population. The sample of line_9: objects contains several normal ellipticals covering a broad line_10: range in nuclear surface brightness and concentration class, line_11: several nearby galaxies covering a range of Hubble types, and a line_12: few Seyfert and otherwise slightly abnormal nuclei. The images line_13: taken will also be searched for bright stars, inner globular line_14: clusters, and absorbing interstellar dust. line_15: The far UV exposures in M31 and M32 are designed to discover line_16: the source of the the far-UV upturn in the light of old line_17: stellar populations. The brightness and luminosity function line_18: of any point sources will be measured, along with the brightness line_19: and distrubution of the diffuse background light. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: WESTPHAL fname: JAMES mi: A. inst: CALTECH country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: Direct exposures are proposed with the Planetary Camera and filters F555W and line_2: F814W of duration 26 sec to 1800 sec. Desired S/N is 100 in the central pixel. line_3: Shorter/multiple exposures are included for cosmic ray removal and possible line_4: stellar nuclear components. Special UV exposures of M31 are also proposed line_5: with F160BW and F300W filters. Dithers are specified in line_6: several of the M31 exposure sequences, to allow better line_7: discrimination of chip problems and true sources. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: For many objects, an exposure sequence has been designed that is intended to line_2: fit within one orbit. Such objects are designated by the special requirement line_3: "SEQ X-Y WITHIN 50 m NO GAP". The purpose of this requirement is to ensure line_4: that all exposures register as well as possible, hence the request that the line_5: telescope not be slewed between exposures. In no case does the exposure line_6: sequence extend beyond 50m (one orbital opportunity). ! question: 6 section: 1 line_1: Limiting noise source is readout noise; exposures should not be interrupted. ! question: 13 section: 1 line_1: Nuclear luminosity distributions and color gradients will be studied in 33 line_2: nearby galaxies using filters F555W and F814W and the Planetary Camera. line_3: Narrow-band images will also be taken of nuclei containing interstellar gas. line_4: Images will be searched for bright stars, globular clusters, and interstellar line_5: dust. UV exposures of M31 using the WFC will be used to study hot stars in the line_6: stellar population in the nuclear bulge. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: WESTPHAL fname: JAMES mi: A. title: PROF. category: PI inst: CALTECH addr_1: M/S 170-25 addr_2: DIVISION OF GEOLOGICAL addr_3: & PLANETARY SCIENCES city: PASADENA state: CA zip: 91125 country: USA phone: 818-395-4900 ! lname: LAUER fname: TOD mi: R. category: CON inst: KPNO/NOAO addr_1: 950 N.
