abstract:

    line_1:        Rich clusters of galaxies at medium to high redshifts provide us
    line_2:        with unique laboratories to study many galaxies in rich environments
    line_3:        and their stellar evolution. In particular we intend to use HST
    line_4:        and WF/PC II to image cluster galaxies in the near and far-UV. Nearby
    line_5:        ellipticals and spiral bulges show dramatic upturns (UVX) in their UV
    line_6:        light below 2000A, and the UVX origin remains unknown. Strong constraints
    line_7:        can be put on the origin of the UVX by tracing its behaviour in cluster
    line_8:        galaxies over redshifts of 0.18<z<0.75. This will be the first UV imaging
    line_9:        of rich cluster galaxies and promises to yield unexpected results.

    line_1:        We will obtain multi-orbit observations with F160W (WOODS) and
    line_2:        F300W filters. The selection of filters is based on
    line_3:        best throughput, lack of redleak, and the cluster restframe
    line_4:        wavelength. The restframe wavelengths will be ~1300A (F160W; spanning the
    line_5:        position of the UVX maxima) and ~2500A (F300W). WF/PC II will be
    line_6:        positioned with the PC on the crowded, inner region of the cluster. The
    line_7:        orientation angle (roll angle of the spacecraft) has been chosen to maximize
    line_8:        the number of (known) cluster members. The requested orientation for A1689
    line_9:        will allow 17 cluster members (primarily E and S0) to be imaged, each
    line_10:       having redshifts (Teague, Carter and Gray 1990) within 2 sigma of the mean
    line_11:       cluster redshift.

    line_4:        The UV capability of WF/PC II combined with high spatial resolution is
    line_5:        essential to this program. The near and far UV spectral energy distributions
    line_6:        of medium to high redshift cluster galaxies is presently unknown. The F160W
    line_7:        (Woods) filter is the best UV filter available that does not have a
    line_8:        red light leak. This science program cannot be attempted from the ground.
    line_9:        HUT (ASTRO-2) has obtained far-UV spectra (Davidsen and Ferguson 1992)
    line_10:       of bright ellipticals (ie. NGC 1399) and bulges (ie. M31), but is
    line_11:       limited to observing only nearby, bright objects.

    line_6:        Exposure times have been estimated from the far-UV spectra (HUT+IUE)
    line_7:        of the M31 bulge, that has been redshifted and cosmologically
    line_8:        corrected. The UVX of M31 suggests that it representative of an
    line_9:        "average" old population galaxy with UVX. It is possible that the
    line_10:       central cluster ellipticals that we will image will be bluer than the
    line_11:       M31 bulge.

    line_1:        The estimated S/N ratios given are for 2x2 pixel binning, for central
    line_2:        regions of each "M31 bulge-like" galaxy. We assume (1550-V)~2.0 and
    line_3:        (3000-V)~2.5. We assume central surface brightnesses of 21.5, 23.5 and
    line_4:        24.0 mag/sq. arcsec. for V, F160W and F300W passbands.  We expect a
    line_5:        spread of S/N ratios due to the variation in properties of cluster
    line_6:        members. Estimates of S/N based on current values near and far UV QE
    line_7:        show that we can successfully determine the near and far UV energy
    line_8:        distributions of the brightest cluster members. Uncertainties in these
    line_9:        numbers reflect the uncertainty in the spectral evolution of the UVX.
