Sufficiently line_3: deep images will be obtained to be able to detect young globular line_4: clusters if they exist, as well as sample some of the primordial line_5: globular clusters which presumably exist in these galaxies. line_6: The detection of young globulars in either type of galaxy will line_7: provide important clues for the formation mechanism of globulars. line_8: If young clusters are found, a study of the luminosity function line_9: of the clusters should help to distinguish between line_10: scenarios in which cluster formation is ongoing and those in which line_11: clusters are formed in bursts. In addition, we propose observations line_12: of the galaxy NGC 1275, in which young clusters were detected with line_13: WFPC-1. These observations will probe to the faintest globular line_14: clusters, and the observed luminosity function will help to line_15: distinguish between different formation mechanisms for the young line_16: clusters. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: TRAUGER fname: JOHN title: PI mi: T inst: 2370 country: USA ! lname: BURROWS fname: CHRIS inst: STSCI country: USA ! lname: CLARKE fname: JOHN inst: UNIV. We will observe two line_2: interacting galaxies, NGC 3597 and NGC 6052, with a 2700S exposure in line_3: each of F555W and F702W. We will observe two cooling flow galaxies, line_4: A496 and A1795, with 5400s of exposure in each filter for each galaxy. line_5: Finally, in NGC 1275, we propose 5400s of exposure in each filter. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: This project requires HST to determine whether the clusters are compact line_2: enough to be considered as globulars (should they be detected). In line_3: addition, to detect the primordial clusters, we must observe very line_4: faint. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: No special requirements. ! question: 13 section: 1 line_1: This proposal fits into the context of the WFPC-2 proposals on line_2: stellar populations. The bulge provides the nearest opportunity line_3: to study individual stars which may represent the primary component line_4: of the stellar population in other spheroidal systems. In addition, line_5: the bulge provides the only opportunity for studying the IMF down line_6: to low mass stars in a metal-rich environment. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: TRAUGER fname: JOHN mi: T. title: CR. category: PI inst: JET PROPULSION LABORATORY addr_1: 4800 OAK GROVE DRIVE city: PASADENA state: CA zip: 91109 country: USA phone: 818-354-9594 ! lname: HOLTZMAN fname: JON mi: A. category: CON inst: LOWELL OBSERVATORY addr_1: 1400 W.
