Images will be taken in F439W, F555W, and line_4: F814W. The main goal will be to measure the luminosity function, line_5: and thus obtain the mass function, of the bulge stars. Understanding line_6: the IMF of the bulge, which samples older metal-rich line_7: stars, is critical to modelling galaxy evolution. With WFPC-2, we line_8: should be able to count stars down to a V of approximately 26.5, line_9: corresponding to an absolute magnitude of approximately 10. In addition line_10: to measuring the luminosity function, the multicolor data will be line_11: used to estimate the age and metallicity of the line_12: bulge stars. This data will complement data obtained with WFPC-1 line_13: in Baade's Window, a field at a galactic latitude of -3.9 degrees, line_14: but should also go significantly fainter. We will also obtain one line_15: far-UV image to look for the presence of strong UV emitting objects line_16: in the bulge population. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: TRAUGER fname: JOHN title: PI mi: T inst: 2370 country: USA ! lname: BURROWS fname: CHRIS inst: STSCI country: USA ! lname: CLARKE fname: JOHN inst: UNIV. We will expose for line_2: 2700s in F439W, F555W, and F814W. These exposures will be CR-split. In line_3: addition, we will obtain shorter exposures in to be line_4: able to measure the brighter stars; measurements of the brighter stars line_5: are important for estimating the foreground population. The F555W and line_6: F814W exposures will go deep and allow us to measure the luminosity line_7: function (and thus infer the mass function). The F439W exposures will line_8: be used in conjuction with the others to infer the characteristics of line_9: the bulge population through fitting the color-magnitude diagram. We line_10: will also obtain one 300s exposure in F160W to look for strong UV line_11: sources in the bulge population. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: This project requires HST because of the extreme crowding of the bulge line_2: fields at low galactic latitudes and also because of the need to line_3: observe very faint stars. Previous ground based work in Baade's Window line_4: has been limited to V<20 by the crowding. We hope to go 6-7 magnitudes line_5: fainter. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: No special requirements. ! ! question: 13 section: 1 line_1: This proposal fits into the context of the WFPC-2 proposals on line_2: star formation in galaxies. Understanding the formation of clusters line_3: is important for understanding how different stellar populations line_4: form and evolve in galaxies. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: TRAUGER fname: JOHN mi: T. title: CR. category: PI inst: JET PROPULSION LABORATORY addr_1: 4800 OAK GROVE DRIVE city: PASADENA state: CA zip: 91109 country: USA phone: 818-354-9594 ! lname: HOLTZMAN fname: JON mi: A. category: CON inst: LOWELL OBSERVATORY addr_1: 1400 W.
