We will investigate the central luminosity line_3: profiles of the galaxies at the highest possible resolution line_4: to look for evidence of resolved cores, non-isothermal profiles, line_5: point-like nuclei and stellar disks and dust lanes. We will line_6: observe in two colors (F342W and F430W) to look for color line_7: gradients in the cores, and to look for dust reddening and hot line_8: stars. We will also observe selected objects in the ultraviolet line_9: (F220W) to investigate the distribution of ultraviolet light line_10: and to compare it to the visible light distribution. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: JEDRZEJEWSKI fname: ROBERT title: DR mi: I inst: 3470 country: USA ! lname: SPARKS fname: WILLIAM title: DR mi: B inst: 3470 country: USA ! lname: CRANE fname: PHILLIPPE title: DR inst: 5520 country: GERMANY esa: Y ! lname: MACCHETTO fname: FERDINANDO title: DR mi: D inst: 3470 country: USA esa: Y ! lname: DISNEY fname: MICHAEL title: PROF mi: J inst: 8094 country: UK esa: Y ! lname: DEHARVENG fname: JEAN-MICHEL title: DR inst: 5446 country: FRANCE esa: Y ! lname: KING fname: IVAN title: PROF mi: R inst: 1500 country: USA ! lname: GREENFIELD fname: PERRY title: DR inst: 3470 country: USA ! lname: MACKAY fname: CRAIG title: DR mi: D inst: 8014 country: UK esa: Y ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: ! question: 3 section: 1 line_1: We propose to take FOC images of several nearby elliptical line_2: galaxies using the F/96 relay and F430W and F342W filters. line_3: Some objects will also be observed using the F220W filter line_4: to map the distribution of ultraviolet emission. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: Our target objects have all been observed with the best-possible line_2: ground-based resolution and show either unresolved cores or else line_3: interesting profiles.
