We have selected a sample of HII regions in M31, with line_5: metallicities in the range 0.3 - 2 solar, with the objective to line_6: determine the upper mass cutoff as a function of metallicity. The line_7: observations will exploit the high resolution characteristics of the line_8: FOC and its UV sensitivity, to construct color- magnitude diagrams line_9: of the selected regions to be compared to theoretical models line_10: derived with a population synthesis code developed by our group. line_11: Syntethic isochrones will be generated and compared to the line_12: observations. This program will address fundamental issues, such line_13: as the effect of the chemical environment during formation on line_14: the upper end of the mass spectrum, and the reliability of indirect line_15: stellar indicators of massive stars, such as ionizing fluxes, line_16: in distant galaxies where massive stars are no longer resolvable. line_17: The results will be of immediate relevance to our understanding of the line_18: the physical processes operating during the star-formation process line_19: and the massive stellar content of galaxies with active star line_20: formation. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: NOTA fname: ANTONELLA title: DR inst: STSCI country: USA esa: Y ! lname: DEHARVENG fname: JEAN MICHEL title: DR inst: LABORATOIRE D'ASTRONOMIE SPATIALE country: FRANCE esa: Y ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: This proposal will take F/96 images with the F130M and line_2: F364M+F4ND filters of five HII regions in M31 spanning line_3: the metallicity range 0.3 -- 2 times the solar metallicity. line_4: The neutral density filters are required for the F364M line_5: images in order to prevent any object in the field from line_6: exceeding the count rate for linear response with the line_7: COSTAR corrected FOC PSF. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: NOTA fname: ANTONELLA title: DR category: PI inst: STSCI addr_1: 3700 SAN MARTIN DRIVE, city: BALTIMORE state: MD zip: 21218 country: USA phone: 410-338-4520 telex: 410-338-4767 ! ! end of general_form_address records fixed_targets: targnum: 1 name_1: BA379 descr_1: D,203 pos_1: RA = 00H 39M 18.899S +/- 1S, pos_2: DEC = +40D 21' 57.47" +/- 1" equinox: 2000 pm_or_par: N comment_1: FLUX REFERS TO THE BRIGHTES OBJECTS fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=15 ! targnum: 2 name_1: BA423 descr_1: D,203 pos_1: RA = 00H 41M 30.249S +/- 1S, pos_2: DEC = +41D 05' 00.57" +/- 1" equinox: 2000 pm_or_par: N comment_1: FLUX REFERS TO THE BRIGHTES OBJECTS fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=15 ! targnum: 3 name_1: BA289 descr_1: D,203 pos_1: RA = 00H 41M 29.495S +/- 1S, pos_2: DEC = +40D 51' 00.54" +/- 1" equinox: 2000 pm_or_par: N comment_1: FLUX REFERS TO THE BRIGHTES OBJECTS fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=15 ! targnum: 4 name_1: BA1-2 descr_1: D,203 pos_1: RA = 00H 43M 34.697S +/- 1S, pos_2: DEC = +41D 09' 52.99" +/- 1" equinox: 2000 pm_or_par: N comment_1: FLUX REFERS TO THE BRIGHTES OBJECTS fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=15 ! targnum: 5 name_1: BA577 descr_1: D,203 pos_1: RA = 00H 44M 01.213S +/- 1S, pos_2: DEC = +41D 49' 07.22" +/- 1" equinox: 2000 pm_or_par: N comment_1: FLUX REFERS TO THE BRIGHTES OBJECTS fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=15 ! ! end of fixed targets !
