The method employed is to line_3: obtain deep WF/PC exposures of the regions near known high redshift quasars and line_4: search for faint, extended objects, including anything associated with the line_5: quasars themselves. Out of the three WF/PC fields, the three brightest extended line_6: objects will be chosen for follow-up with the FOS. Depending on the magnitudes line_7: of the objects, long integrations with G650L or the prism will be used to line_8: compare the spectral energy distributions of the primeval galaxies to lower line_9: redshift objects to study the evolution of galaxies. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: BEAVER fname: EDWARD inst: UC, SAN DIEGO country: USA ! lname: BURBIDGE fname: E. These images will be searched for line_3: signs of extended emission which may either be associated with the quasar line_4: itself or with neighboring galaxies. Because the region in the immediate line_5: vicinity of the quasar is of interest, the Baum spot will not be used. With line_6: the wide filter, the roughly 18th magnitude quasars will saturate during the line_7: long exposures and bleed down a column or two on the CCD. This is preferable line_8: to losing the entire region immediately adjacent to the quasar. line_10: Assuming that at least several extended objects are found, the three brightest line_11: candidates will be observed with FOS, using either G650L (if V
