The clusters span a range in line strength from H line_4: VIII and M IV (very metal-poor), through M II, to K58 (slightly sub-solar). line_5: Problems to be studied include the luminosity fuction of stars on the cluster line_6: giant branch, their spread in temperature, horizontal-branch morphology, and line_7: the tidal radii of the clusters. Of special interest is the apparent magnitude line_8: of the horizontal branch and its possible utility as a distance indicator. The line_9: HR diagram of any background stellar population in the halo of M31 and the line_10: general field of NGC205 will also be compiled, and the age and metallicity line_11: distribution of the background population studied. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: WESTPHAL fname: JAMES mi: A. inst: CALTECH country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: One-orbit, dark-time exposure in each of two filters, F555W and F814W, are line_2: planned on each cluster. A background field in M31 is also planned in order to line_3: allow subtraction of the superposed M31 population on NGC205. Additional line_4: shorter exposures are included for cosmic-ray subtraction. ! question: 6 section: 1 line_1: Limiting source of noise is readout noise; exposures must not be interrupted. line_3: It is also desired that all exposures longer than 1000 sec be taken after the line_4: telescope has passed beyond the brightly lit limb of the Earth (see note on line_5: "dark time" on exposure logsheets). It is not requested that the telescope line_6: actually be within the Earth's shadow. Dark time is needed to minimize diffuse line_7: scattered light and maximize S/N on faint stars. The above guideline of 1000 line_8: sec may need modification after real experience in orbit. ! question: 13 section: 1 line_1: HR diagrams are planned in filters F555W and F785LP for three globular star line_2: clusters MII, MIV, and K58 in M31. These fields also contain the line_3: background halo stellar population of M31. A fourth target containing the line_4: globular cluster H VIII and the general field of NGC205 is also planned. line_5: Analysis will include giant-branch luminosity functions, horizontal-branch line_6: morphology, horizontal-branch magnitudes, and age and metallicity distributions line_7: of stars in both clusters and field, as well as the radial density profiles of line_8: the clusters. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: AJHAR fname: EDWARD category: CON inst: KPNO/NOAO addr_1: NOAO addr_2: 950 N.
