It is believed that these line_4: PN nuclear stars have temperatures in excess of 100000 degrees Kelvin and the line_5: large flux in the far ultraviolet produces a nebular surface brightness that line_6: overwhelms the stellar radiation in the visual when resolution is seeing line_7: limited. Also since these stars are believed to evolve from the red giant phase line_8: at constant luminosity they are fainter in the visual than cooler PNN's. The line_9: WF/PC spatial resolution will enhance the contrast by the order of 100 while an line_10: additional enhancement will be achieved by observing in the UV. This program line_11: should result in providing sufficient photometric data to determine the nature line_12: of these hot central stars. The UV photometry provides a means of determining line_13: the interstellar extinction of the central star which is crucial to the line_14: determination of the flux and stellar temperature. The targets/filters are: line_15: NGC 7027/F185W/F218W/F547M, ME2-1 line_16: /F185W/F218W/F255W/F336W/F439W/F547M ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: WESTPHAL fname: JAMES mi: A. inst: CALTECH country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: The observations require several exposures with different filters in order to line_2: cover the wide spectral range , required line_3: to determine interstellar extinction and effective temperature. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: No real time or special scheduling required. ! question: 8 section: 1 line_1: No supporting or coordinated observations required. ! question: 13 section: 1 line_1: This program is planned in order to detect the central stars in NGC 7027, NGC line_2: 2440, Me2-1, and IC 2165 where they have not been detected, presumably because line_3: the bulk of the radiation is in the form of ionizing photons. The photometry line_4: should provide data on the effective temperature of these stars. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: WESTPHAL fname: JAMES mi: A. title: PROF. category: PI inst: CALTECH addr_1: M/S 170-25 addr_2: DIVISION OF GEOLOGICAL & addr_3: PLANETARY SCIENCES city: PASADENA state: CA zip: 91125 country: USA ! lname: CODE fname: ARTHUR mi: C. category: CON inst: UNIV.
