One area line_4: (Baade's Window) is about 4 degrees from the Galactic line_5: nucleus and the other is 8 degrees from the nucleus. We line_6: seek the mean age of the stellar population and the initial line_7: mass function. Stars inhabiting the central bulge of the line_8: Milky Way include many that are much more metal-rich than line_9: those in the solar neighborhood. The bulge population, line_10: whose integrated light resembles that of elliptical line_11: galaxies, is 100 times closer than any other sample. Even line_12: so, extreme crowding makes the bulge difficult to investi- line_13: gate with groundbased telescopes. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: WESTPHAL fname: JAMES mi: A. inst: CALTECH country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: Short exposures with two WF/PC filters (F555W, line_2: and F814W) will enable us to determine photometric zero- line_3: points in these crowded fields and to correct for reddening line_4: on a small spatial scale. Long exposures with F555W and line_5: F814W will enable us to extend both the color-magnitude line_6: diagram and the luminosity function several magnitudes. ! question: 6 section: 1 line_1: Except for CR-splits, exposures should not be interrupted. line_2: To minimize scattered light, we request dark time for all line_3: exposures >/= 500 sec. By dark time, we mean that the line_4: telescope should be beyond the brightly lit limb of the line_5: Earth in the dark half of the orbit. We do not require line_6: that the telescope actually be within the Earth's shadow. ! question: 13 section: 1 line_1: Deep exposures in Baade's Window and in an "8-degree field" line_2: will extend the color-magnitude diagram and luminosity line_3: function to very faint magnitudes, greatly increasing our line_4: knowledge of the stellar population in the nuclear bulge of line_5: the Galaxy. Short exposures in a second Baade Window field line_6: and in NGC 188 are designed to aid in determining magnitude line_7: scale zero points, interstellar obscuration, and PSFs. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: WESTPHAL fname: JAMES mi: A. title: PROF. category: PI inst: CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY addr_1: M/S 170-25 addr_2: DIVISION OF GEOLOGICAL addr_3: & PLANETARY SCIENCES city: PASADENA state: CA zip: 91125 country: USA phone: 818-395-4900 ! lname: BAUM fname: WILLIAM mi: A. category: CON inst: UNIV.
