abstract:

    line_1:        The goal of this project is to determine trigonometric parallaxes for several
    line_2:        Hyades cluster members and to define the Population I zero age main sequence.
    line_3:        The ZAMS is used to determine the distances to open clusters and to establish
    line_4:        the zero point of the Cepheid Period-Luminosity relationship, which is the
    line_5:        fundamental distance indicator in the universe. A secondary goal of this
    line_6:        project is to search for new Hyades cluster members which might be as faint at
    line_7:        the 25th magnitude, or M(v)=22. This part of the project will be accomplished
    line_8:        through coordinated parallel observations with the WFC to determine proper
    line_9:        motions of very faint stars over a one year base line.
    line_11:       FGS parallax observations of the thirteen Hyades members should yield an error
    line_12:       in the distance modulus of the Hyades Cluster good to approximately 0.014 mag.
    line_13:       This accuracy should be sufficient to eliminate the Hyades as a source of error
    line_14:       in determining the galactic distance scale.

    line_2:        of 0.002 arcsec, which is some 4 times poorer than the projected accuracy from
    line_3:        the ST. Based on this accuracy, we would have to determine parallaxes for
    line_4:        about 350 stars in the Hyades in order to determine the distance modulus to
    line_5:        0.01 mag. This is not really possible since the total stellar content of the
    line_6:        cluster is also about 350 and many of the stars are too bright to observe
    line_7:        accurately.

    line_1:        In order to obtain the highest possible accuracy, it is necessary to
    line_2:        operate in a purely differential manner. In the case of the FGS, this means
    line_3:        that the target field should always be placed in precisely the same part of the
    line_4:        FGS pickle. In this case we are most concerned with local errors in the field
    line_5:        distortion and encoders. These errors can be minimized if weare careful to
    line_6:        keep our measurements as differential as is possible. To accomplish this we
    line_7:        must orient the ST at the same roll angle for each observation at epochs 1, 3
    line_8:        and 5 and 180 degrees from that angle for epochs 2 and 4. Since each
    line_9:        observation will take about 10 minutes, it is possible to complete all of the 4
    line_10:       or 6 observations for one epoch during one orbit.
